Kimi ga oshietekureta koto ("Things You Taught Me") Episode Three |
||||
Mayuko is doing the weather report on her computer. ("Monday, April 24. Tomorrow, in the late afternoon, there will be rain. Those returning home in the evening should not forget to bring an umbrella with them." Jun comes in and asks her about her meeting with Shinichi. She tells him it's a "secret". Just then, Akiko comes running in, and asks that if Mayuko could go somewhere with her tomorrow. Mayuko says "tomorrow?"and looks uneasy... and Jun tells his mom that it's too sudden for Mayuko, that she should tell her in advance so that she can be "prepared'. Akiko says that it was Yohei's idea. Akiko and Mayuko are touring this factory. The foreman taking them around is showing her how the machines work, saying that it's quite simple and easy to learn. The foreman introduces Mayuko to this girl - Ono Misaki - who's already working there. The girl appears to also suffer from autism. Suddenly there's this loud ringing - which upsets Mayuko - and Misaki goes to her saying that the clock will ring for 10 seconds at noontime to signal the lunch-hour, and after one hour, it will ring for 10 seconds again to signal the recommencement of work. The foreman takes the mother to his office, and Mayuko and Misaki are sitting outside. Misaki asks if Mayuko was also sent here by the Job Placement Office for Handicapped People. Mayuko asks if Misaki also has autism, and she says yes. When asked if she's happy, Misaki says that she doesn't know, but at least she is able to handle the job here. Mayuko asks if there's any job Misaki would enjoy doing, and Misaki says that "what she wants to do and what she can do are two different things." Misaki seems happy to be working there. Mayuko gets up and feels the wind, saying "North wind, No. 3 strength. It will start raining this evening." Misaki is impressed that she can predict the weather. Mayuko asks her how old she is, and they start to play a numbers game. Misaki is 23 yrs. old. ("4 years ago my age was a prime number, and so is this year's.) Mayuko is 20 yrs. old. ("one year ago, my age was a prime number, and three years on will be one as well.") They agree to exchange emails. Back at home, Akiko was telling her family about the job and how Mayuko got along so well with Misaki. They are relieved for her, when she tells them that she's not taking the job. Mayuko tells them that Shinichi agreed that she should to do work that she really enjoys. Her dad wants to know who this Shinichi is, and they tell him that it's Jun's teacher and a former psychiatrist, the one who saved Mayuko on stage at Takuma's event. Her father is annoyed by Shinichi's words. ("finding work you enjoy...what sort of irresponsible statement is that?") He blames him for Mayuko's refusal, saying it's hard enough finding something for her. Jun tries to defend his sister, but their father cuts him off. Outside the door, Mayuko can hear them arguing. Shinichi is at Takuma's office. Takuma asked him to come, telling him that he was the one who'd got Mayuko a job interview at the computer company but unfortunately, it didn't work out. He wants to talk to Shinichi about how training people like Mayuko to adapt into normal society. He said that he also knew of Shinichi's background and thinks that he would be ideal person to help Mayuko. Shinichi refuses, and Takuma says he has one other request. He's heard that people with autism often retain strong impressions of past incidents, and asks Shinichi if it's true. Shinichi says that he believes their memories should be quite good, but he's not clear on the details. (Takuma kind of looks thoughtful at his words.) As Shinichi gets up to leave, Rina comes in. They look at each other, and Takuma asks if they are acquainted. Rina doesn't answer, handing Takuma some documents he wanted from her. Jun goes to Mayuko's room looking for her and finds the print-out of the weather reporter job Mayuko had found on the Internet. Shinichi goes after Rina, asking her why she went to see Takuma. Rina tells him that she's looking for a job. He then asks her about her visit to Sakuma's office earlier. She brushes him off, saying that it was an "industry secret". He tells her not to make trouble, and she accuses him of having feelings for Mayuko. Shinichi's phone rings and it's Jun, asking if Mayuko is with him. Shinichi says no and Jun says that he thought Mayuko would have gone to see him. He says that if Shinichi sees Mayuko, to tell her that everything's okay and she can come home. Shinichi is a bit puzzled but Jun doesn't want to tell him and asks him to just tell her that "father said so" and she would understand. He hangs up before Shinichi can ask him what's wrong. Shinichi is worried and runs off to find Mayuko. Shinichi finds Mayuko inside the wooden playhouse in the park. Shinichi tells her what Jun had said. He asks her what's wrong, and tells her that he'll take her home but she won't go. Shinichi takes Mayuko back to his place (they're both soaked) and calls Akiko, telling her that he'd taken her back to his place. Shinichi goes to Mayuko, remarking that she's "soaked to the skin by the rain...how is that possible when she predicts the weather." Mayuko tells Shinichi that her father had found work for her but she didn't want it. The interview for her job (the one she wanted) was coming up. Shinichi says it's best to decide for yourself, that way there are no regrets. "Regret?" asks Mayuko. "Meaning to make sure you're mentally prepared, so you won't have to worry about it after." replies Shinichi. He tells her not to worry as weather is her strength. Mayuko sees Tear and picks her up, smiling. Shinichi remarks that when she sees something she likes, her face lights up with a smile. She asks if she normally doesn't smile, and Shinichi says that he didn't mean it that way. She tells him that she doesn't know when she would smile, that she didn't really know how to so she scared to smile. She thought other people smiled at strange times, and didn't know how they could do it so naturally. Shinichi tells her that it could be based on the meaning behind tje words, or by an expression or a body movement could be the cause, and that smiling was a natural reflex. Mayuko says "so you don't have to consider it first", and when Shinichi says no, she replies that she doesn't think she'd be able to do that. She asks when it would be a good time to smile, and Shinichi tells her "when you want to be with someone, when you want to support someone or when you don't want that person to worry." Mayuko sees the photo of Muki (Shinichi's deceased girlfriend) and says that she is smiling. She asks if the girl in the photo wanted to be with Shinichi, to be his "companion". Mayuko wanted to be able to smile like that too. Shinichi looks at the photo and remembers Muki's accident. She's waving goodbye to Shinichi, saying "don't forget our promise, you must come..." and doesn't see the car coming at her... Mayuko asks him if the girl is someone that has passed away. She guessed from the way his fingers were clutching the photo, that it's when a person wanted to cry. She said when her cousin died, her aunt had the same reaction. She asked if Shinichi loved the girl, and if he was going to cry. He says that he's can't, that even though this happened two years ago, he still can't cry. Mayuko asks when one would want to cry, and Shinichi tells her that it's when you are happy, sad, or remorseful. She asks if he doesn't have those feelings... and he says that even though he can't cry, he still has them. Mayuko asks if he actually wants to cry, and is scared that he can't and that's what makes him want to cry. (i.e. that his tears - or lack of them - are linked to his fears..hmmn, quite perspicacious of her, no?) Shinichi stops her, saying that emotions can't be explained by mere words. Mayuko says that is why she wants him to teach her, and Shinichi says it's not that easy. She asks him what he's so scared of. He tells her that she wouldn't understand, that she didn't know what it was like to feel sorrow and not be able to cry. He says that he knows all about sorrow, and he's totally different from her who has never experienced it. Jun calls, saying that he would come by to pick up Mayuko. Jun takes Mayuko home. He doesn't seem to like the fact that Shinichi had taken Mayuko back to his place, and says that he should have brought her straight back here. Akiko apologizes for misunderstanding Mayuko and says that she will talk to Yohei, and that she would support Mayuko to get the job that she wanted. The next morning, Mayuko comes down and Akiko says good morning, smiling widely. Mayuko comes right up to her mother, and asks how she can smile so happily, as she too wants to smile "better". Akiko asks if it's for her interview and she takes Mayuko to a mirror and tries to teach her facial expressions. Mayuko emails Masaki, telling how how she's been practising her smile but doesn't seem to have any improvement. Masaki emails her back, saying that it's not possible for autism patients to smile normally, no matter how hard you practise. She says that other people don't understand how difficult it is for them. She asks in that case, if it's better to smile for others, or not to smile. Mayuko looks up at the skylight and thinks that with the approach of Spring, plants have started to sprout new shoots, and it's only her that cannot adjust by "leaving old habits behind and adjusting to new things". Rina has written an article about autism, which mentions Mayuko, that will be published in her magazine Scoop. Shinichi doesn't seem comfortable with the idea of her using Mayuko in the article but she tries to justify it to him by saying that autism is a relevent topic in today's society and it's natural to use Mayuko since she has become quite famous through her weather website predictions. Rina then starts to probe about Shinichi's feelings towards Mayuko. She asks him if he is able to not take up a "doctor's role" when he sees her, especially since he knows that resuming a doctor's identity will cause him pain. Just before she leaves, she tells him that he should go to her sister's 3rd anniversary commemoration ceremony since it's useless for him to try to escape. Mayuko goes for her interview at Weather World, but while the rest of the applicants go off, Mayuko is sidetracked by one of the computers there with a satellite programme for tracking the weather. She tells the bemused Weather World staff working on that computer that from the low pressure areas on the satellite map and the wind pressures, there'll be rain in two hours' time. As she is talking, the interviewer comes back to get her. Mayuko gets full-marks on the applicant's test, but during her interview, the HR guy seems a little concerned about Mayuko's lack of qualifications and experience, especially in soil analysis (??) and he says that many applicants are better qualified in this area than she is. They get on the subject of the heavy rain resulting in flooding and landslides, and while they disagree on the probabilities, (he says 90% chance, she says 45-55%), the interview seems overall to have gone okay. As he shows her out, a Weather World staff is returning to work, and tells his colleague (the one Mayuko was talking to earlier) that it really had started raining, and in exactly 2 hours as per her prediction earlier! When Mayuko gets home, her mom asks her how the interview went, and she replies that she doesn't know but that she'd enjoyed herself. Her mom hands her Shinichi's clothes (the ones Mayuko had borrowed when she got caught in the downpour) which she has now cleaned, and Mayuko goes to the school to return them to Shinichi. As she's waiting for him at the school's entrance, Jun's classmate Chihiro comes up to her. It turns out that Shinichi had taken the day off to attend Muki's commemoration. Mayuko is worried that it will make him want to cry and wonders out loud why he would choose to go somewhere that would do that. Chihiro thinks that it is perhaps he wants to "ascertain" whether the person is really dead. Mayuko walks off, thinking to herself that Shinichi wants to ascertain whether he is able to cry or not. Akiko gets a call from Weather World telling her that they have decided to hire Mayuko on probation. Shinichi is at Muki's grave. Rina comes up to him and says that he must have really loved her sister deeply. She then comments that her sister was "foolish" to have come that close to happiness [and not make it]. Shinichi says that he is the fool, and that at the time... Rina cuts him off, telling him not to talk about it anymore and that it was an accident. Shinichi tells her that at the time he had felt "uncertainty" but when Rina pressed him to tell her why, he asked her to give him more time. Rina replied that he's already had two years. When Shinichi returns home that night, he finds Mayuko waiting on his doorstep. She gives him back his clothes and asks if he is feeling pained, and if he had been able to cry. When he says no, she asks if he felt scared, and he replied "a little". Mayuko tries to smile at him (but it comes out funny) and tell him that she's been practising her smile for him, because she wants to be his companion. She says she knows that it's painful not to be able to cry, but that she feels that it is even more frightening to her when she is trying to decide when it is appropriate to smile. Shinichi is touched by her words and goes up close to her, and starts stroking her hair. Mayuko seems to be a lot more comfortable with him now, and even leans towards him a little... - End of Episode Three - |
