("Things You Taught Me")

Episode Two

As Shinichi holds out his little finger, Mayuko hesitates, and he asks if she can give him another chance to make a promise, but she refuses. He then asks her about naming the kitten.

Mayuko is looking out of the skylight in her bedroom, thinking that the rain which started last night should stop by 2:30 in the afternoon, and there will be a beautiful sunset. She feels that the rain seems to have pulled away the arrival of spring, but no matter whether one has accepted the new lifestyle or not, life will revert back to normal.

Jun comes in, asking her if she'd finished her weather report and sees that she's looking at an autism website. Mayuko asks if he knew about her autism, and when he says yes, she says that she is the only one who didn't know. Jun says because they all didn't really believe that she really had it. Mayuko wishes that she had known earlier. She shows him a paragraph in the website that says that with appropriate training and information, dults with autism can function in normal society. Mayuko asks June where this information is and who will teach her. She asks Jun to teach her but he says that he can't. She then asks if Jun's teacher (Shinichi) will teach her.

Shinichi is teaching at the school, and as he looks out the window, he sees a beautiful sunset.

Rina is at work in the newsroom (she's a reporter), and working on a story about Mayuko. The media is even more interested, following the Takuma incident, and Mayuko is wondering what Takuma's intention is.

Takuma goes to see Akiko and apologizes for what happened at the function, saying that he didn't realise that she didn't know she had autism. Takuma asks how Mayuko is doing and Akiko says that she's doing unexpectedly well, and he asks if that means she's better now than before. Akiko said that if Mayuko had received professional help when she was young, then perhaps she would not be like this now, but they couldn't find a good doctorthat was suitable for her. Takuma says that they shouldn't waste Mayuko's talents, but Akiko doesn't really consider Mayuko's weather-detecting abilities to be a "talent", saying that she's not really serious about it.

Jun comes home and Akiko asks him if they could discuss Mayuko's case with Shinichi. Jun tells his mother to approach Shinichi herself (he probably remembers how Shinichi turned him down the last time...)

She goes back to the living room, and Takuma asks if Jun is also very concerned about his sister. He says that disabled people that can't take care of themselves can become a burden on their family. Akiko thinks it would be better if Mayuko could find work. Takuma offers to try to find a job for Mayuko.

Mayuko and Shinichi meet in the park as arranged. Shinichi has brought the cat but Mayuko has not thought of a name yet. Mayuko asks Shinichi why he knows about autism when he is a teacher. She tells him that because she does not know what others are thinking, she is afraid to interact with them. Shinichi says that people's feelings are complex and difficult to understand. Mayuko likens it to making a date with "ubikiri" (linking of little fingers) - saying that "if the meeting is worthwhile, then it's okay." Shinichi tells the cat "you must remember that this person [meaning Mayuko] is your savior", but Mayuko objects to Shinichi calling the cat "you", saying that she has decided to name the cat "Tear". She explains that the cat gives her the same feelings as those of crying. Shinichi notes that Tear is playing up to Mayuko, and Mayuko replies that the cat wants to remember her, and is "practising" now.

At the Amemiya residence, they're discussing Mayuko's job interview. (Looks like Takuma came through with his promise to find work for Mayuko.) But Akiko is worried about Mayuko's performance and Jun is defending her, saying that it would be no problem. As they are arguing, Mayuko gets up and leaves the room. (She was getting increasingly nervous throughout Akiko and Jun's exchange.) Akiko is worried that she's upset but Jun thinks his sister's reaction is from being too happy.

Mayuko is twirling about in her room. (She does indeed seem very happy.) She sends an email to Shinichi: "Sensei, can you find me? Mayuko."

In the living room, Yohei doesn't seem to like Takuma interfering with his family's affairs. But Akiko wants to give Mayuko this one chance (to have a normal life).

Akiko meets Shinichi in a coffee house, saying that she heard from Jun that he used to be a psychiatrist, and that when they discussed him in front of Mayuko, she would become quite interested, which is quite rare as she is not normally interested in other people. She says even as a child, Mayuko was like that, and she never played with friends, only by herself. She had tantrums whenever she was scolded by the teacher, and the teacher would blame her as the mother for not being able to control her child. She'd never thought to see Mayuko moving on into the workforce. She explains that that is why she wants Mayuko to persevere in finding a job. She asks Shinichi to help Mayuko.

Shinichi wants to know Mayuko's feelings on this, and whether she herself wanted to go to him for therapy. Akiko says that Mayuko has already started looking to Shinichi for support. Shinichi thinks that Dr. Sakuma would be a more suitable person to help Mayuko but Akiko argues that even Sakuma has said that for autism, the doctor and patient must be very compatible. Shinichi says that their "compatibility" could be because they are alike in some ways. He says that he is unable to fulfill the role of being Mayuko's doctor.

Later, when Shinichi tells Jun that he has refused his mother's request, and while Jun is disappointed, he says that he won't give up and will find other ways to help Mayuko, and to cure her autism.

Mayuko is practising for her job interview with Jun. Jun is giving her advice, telling her not to fidget and to make eye contact. Jun asks her for for three strongest points, and she says that she is hardworking, dedicated and focused, and that she would work unrelentingly for each and every duty that she is given. Just like when she was small, if she was given a game..." As she drones on and on, Jun grabs her reference book and marvels at how she can memorize word for word what the book says.

Rina is at Shinichi's place, and she has brought him sandwiches, beer and salad. Shinichi doesn't seem very appreciative, saying that if she was sincere, she should have made the meal herself. Rina says that it's all a farce, that a girl only does that while you're dating and once you're married, she wouldn't do it anymore. Rina remembers that her sister was a very good cook, and says that she wished she was more like her sister. Rina asks if he is going to attend the 3rd anniversary gathering for her sister (from the card she'd given him earlier) and he says that he'll think about it. Rina says that he doesn't want to face facts, but that it doesn't really matter whether he goes or not.

She says that he's actually thinking about something else anyway. (Rina has just seen him reading the email from Mayuko on his computer.) She asks if he's going to help Mayuko and Shinichi tells her that he's not. Rina seems relieved by this news and says that it doesn't matter then. Shinichi says that the two things (the commemoration event and helping Mayuko) are totally unrelated. Rina says that she doesn't want to see history repeat itself, and Shinichi says that it's none of her business. Anyway, he isn't going to be a psychiatrist anymore.

Akiko is in Jun's room, saying that she appreciated him working so hard to help his sister with the interview practise but that he must take care of his health. Akiko then says that she'd spoken to Yohei about letting Jun do what he wants to do. Jun tells his mother not to think so much, and not to be so pessimistic. Akiko says that she still feels disappointed from being turned down by Shinichi. Jun says that's why he wants to be a doctor, so that he can help Mayuko himself. (He thinks that Shinichi has refused to help because even though he's a psychiatrist, it's not his speciality area, so he doesn't have the confidence to cure Mayuko.)

Mayuko walks by and hears Jun say that Shinichi is a psychiatrist. Akiko tells her that he has refused to treat her for her illness. Mayuko is upset by the thought of Shinichi "treating" her and walks away.

The next day, Mayuko is in a bookstore and accidentally drops some books she had chosen. Shinichi walks by and helps her pick them up. He sees that they are reference books for job interviews. Mayuko tells him that her interview is tomorrow, and she wants to cram for it.

They leave the store together and Shinichi offers her a ride on his bike. She obviously has never ridden with someone before, and first sits backwards on the passenger seat! Shinichi tells her to relax, and to hold onto him, otherwise she'll fall off. After a while, she starts to enjoy herself, and tells Shinichi that it's nice to feel the wind blowing by, and Shinichi accelerates to give her more of a thrill.

Mayuko asks Shinichi if he used to be a psychiatrist, and when he says yes, she asks if that's the reason why he saved her last time, and why he doesn't mind her abnormality. He tells her that it's not. She then wonders if the things he's done for her was out of pity. Shinichi says that he hasn't done anything for her, and that he feels bad for not being able to help her.

Mayuko then asks if that's why he's willing to spend time with her. He says that that's not what he meant, that it's because he doesn't have the confidence to tell others what to do. Mayuko says that she wants to know what goes on inside people's hearts... but Shinichi says abruptly that he doesn't. Mayuko is intimidated by his tone, and asks if he is angry. He apologises and she asks what he's done wrong to apologise. He says she won't understand, and she replies that that's why she said she wanted to understand [it's that hearts business again].

Shinichi is talking to Sakuma about Mayuko in a pub. He's surprised that Mayuko hasn't told Sakuma about her interview tomorrow (Sakuma being Mayuko's doctor), and Sakuma says that it's probably because he hasn't gained her trust. Sakuma tells Shinichi that Rina had been to see him, asking about autism and about Mayuko, but Sakuma told her it was against doctor's policy to tell her anything. Shinichi wonders why Rina is doing this. Sakuma then says that in everyone's heart, there's a part that you don't want others to reach, but some people aren't even aware of that simple fact, and that even from normal social interactions..." He stops and says, half-jokingly, that he's not supposed to talk about such things. Shinichi says he's sorry about the last time (when he told Sakuma at his office that he non longer wanted to discuss psychology anymore). They continue to joke around, but Shinichi seems to be a bit worried about something.

Mayuko is going for her job interview. There are some other people also waiting for the interview and she chooses to sit some distance away from them, so that when the HR person gathers them for the interview process, they go off without Mayuko. Mayuko's the only one left in the waiting area, and the woman goes up to her, telling her that the interviews are about to end.

At Amemiya Construction, Yohei calls home to ask about Mayuko's interview. Jun comments that their father too is concerned about Mayuko.

In the interview room, they ask her why she wants to join their company. Mayuko starts to recite one of the chapters in her reference books that deal with this question, saying that computers were an integral part of today's society, etc.etc. (As she is speaking, Shinichi is in his office, looking at Mayuko's website. There's a message on her site saying that she's taking a rest today, and that it will resume tomorrow.) She's doing really well, when they ask her to explain why she is "different" from other people. She's unprepared for that question, and only says that there are many differences between her and others. They then ask her why she quit the computer college midway. She says that it's hard for her to give them an answer, and wants to give them an answer by email, which of course they don't accept, saying that in that case, there would be no need for a face-to-face interview. One of the interviewers drops his pen and it rolls near her. He asks her to pass it back to him, and she picks it but doesn't know what to do, not being prepared for this situation...

As Mayuko leaves the company, Rina comes running up to her, wanting to talk to her. Mayuko asks her who she is, and she says that she is Sakuma's friend. Rina says to Mayuko that she wants to write about Mayuko's inner feelings, so that it can be shared with other people. She asks about Mayuko's autism but Mayuko tells her that she doesn't understand it herself. Rina says that if she doesn't talk it, then others won't be able to understand. Mayuko replied that even if she did speak out, people may not understand anyway. Rina then shows Mayuko a picture of Takuma and how Mayuko knew him. Mayuko said that she met him on April 13th (the day of the event).

As Rina gathers her photos, some picture of Shinichi fall out, and Mayuko picks one up and looks at it. Rina tells Mayuko "not to put Shinichi through so much pain", and Mayuko echoes "...pain..." Rina says that it will be very painful for Shinichi to be together with Mayuko. Mayuko doesn't understand why and Rina asks her if she knows what it is like to "like" someone. Mayuko says yes, and then she asks if Mayuko knew what "love" was. Mayuko says that she doesn't. Rina tells Mayuko that "love" is a "deeper, more serious form of like", and that it is a very strong emotion.

Rina tells Mayuko that Shinichi once loved someone who has passed away, and because of the pain he suffered, he has locked his heart away, and that's why he stopped being a psychiatrist. Being with Mayuko will remind him of psychiatry and will thus cause him pain. Mayuko is shocked to be told that she will cause Shinichi pain, and she gives Rina back the photo and walks away.

Takuma is on the phone with Yohei. He apologises for all the trouble (from the interview he set up for Mayuko) and says that he will think of something else. Meanwhile Rina shows up at his office, and guesses that he is on the phone with Yohei. She asks why he's doing so much for Mayuko, and wants to know what's in it for him but Takuma won't tell her. He suggests going somewhere for dinner but she leaves, saying she's not in the mood for it.

Shinichi receives a call from Jun, because Mayuko isn't home yet and their family is getting really worried about her. Shinichi goes out to look for Mayuko, taking Tear (the cat) with him.

Mayuko's wandering around in the streets, thinking about what Rina had said to her. A passerby accidentally bumps into her, and she freaks out when he tries to help her up. Takuma passes by at this point, and offers to take Mayuko home.

Shinichi still looking for Mayuko when he gets a call (from Jun, I suppose) that they found Mayuko. He is really relieved by the news.

Back at home, Yohei is vexed with Mayuko for disappearing like that, and says that it's pointless to persevere with finding work for her. He says that with his construction company growing, he can't afford to constantly ask business favours from others. Jun argues that he should consider Mayuko's feelings in this, and he replies "what use would that do?"

Mayuko asks them to stop arguing, and says that "if it's useless, then let's not discuss it anymore." She goes up to her room and sends an email to Shinichi saying "my soul is crying".

Shinichi goes to the park, and sees Mayuko there, singing to herself. He goes up to her and starts to apologise for the last time, when Mayuko gets up and leaves. He thinks she's still mad at him, but she tells him that it's only because she doesn't want to give him pain, because he has to take on a doctor's role when he's with her. He asks her who told her this and she says it's Rina.

Mayuko then says that she wishes he wasn't a doctor, and that she only wanted him to teach her (ordinary) things that others already knew. Things like love, happiness and sorrow. He says that it's better not to know about sorrow, but she thinks that "you need to know what sorrow is before you can understand what happiness is."

Mayuko then says that she wished she was like other people, then she wouldn't have to cause Shinichi pain. Shinichi replies that he too wanted her to teach him things, that he isn't sure what he should do. And he's not sure how they would end up. He says that perhaps midway, I may "run away".

"To where?", Mayuko wants to know. He laughs and she wonders if she'd said something wrong. Shinichi tells her that he will always be her friend and stay by her side. She then tugs at the coat, saying that she wants to make sure he'll stay there. As they're walking back, Shinichi asks Mayuko if her soul is still crying, and she says no.

Mayuko goes to Shinichi's school to look for him. She's a little frightened by one of his colleagues who mistakes her for a new student, but Shinichi rescues her and takes her into one of the meeting rooms inside the school. Jun sees Mayuko and is a little surprised. He at first lingers outside the room, but then is pulled away by his classmate Chihiro.

Inside the meeting room, Mayuko says that she has something to "report" to Shinichi. Shinich tells her that she doesn't have to be so formal when talking to him, and not to use such polite terms as "masu" and "desu".

Mayuko's news is that she has found a job - all by herself! She found the job ad on the Internet, and it is a weather company looking for a weather reporter. Shinichi is astounded - and impressed - by her resourcefulness. He thinks the job perfect for her.
