Episode 11 (Final)

Ryo tells Takako that he's decided to stay in Tokyo and remain by Yuka's side. Takako tries to dissuade him but his mind is made up and he says it'll be just like in the old days, before Toru came into their lives. But Takako murmurs "how about Yuka's feelings..." (implying that Yuka herself had changed and they couldn't go back to before...)

Yuka's working non-stop, and Takako is getting worried about her and tries to get her to go to bed. But Yuka says that they'd made a yakusoku and when she's finished, she can use the mahoo no beru to get Toru to come back. She recalls what he had said to her about how there'll be times when they want to be together and can't, saying that this is one of those times.

Yuka's steering committee is holding a meeting, and Ooya explains to everyone about the recent changes, and says that even though Toru's quit, he hoped to still be ready in time to hold Yuka's exhibition in the Spring, and asked Yuka to continue to work hard. She smiles and agrees to ganbatte.

Machiko is getting ready to leave for her vacation (she's going back to her hometown) and they all assemble to take a picture together at the restaurant.

Yuka's busily making her sculptures and she's thinking about where to put them so Toru can see them... she makes a decision and starts to transport each piece as it's completed to some place out in the open. (We're not shown where her destination actually is...)

Machiko is back in her hometown, and one day while she's out biking, Machiko sees Toru from afar. She calls Ryo to tell him but he asks her not to say anything to Toru because he doesn't want Toru to have anything more to do with them.

Asako goes to see Ryo and tells him the truth about Toru leaving. She says that Toru wrote the story to protect Yuka and her talent, and that she believed he'd made up his mind to disappear when he'd decide to write the story.

She explains to him how he'd gone to see her the night before the news broke, and told her to keep it a secret from Yuka because he didn't want to upset her. She said to him that it's not like him to do something like that, and he replied that up till now, he'd always considered himself to be a detached observer, able to make decisions based on right and wrong, but Yuka had changed his perspective. He says that if he can't differentiate between what's right and not, and if he's not sure how to go about protecting Yuka, how can he make her happy? He says "a broken wing is useless..."

Asako tells Ryo that she'd meant to keep her promise to Toru but she changed her mind after seeing Yuka so hard at work to keep her own promise to Toru. She gives him the candies and pager that Toru left behind and turns to go. Just before she leaves, she turns back to Toru and asks him if she's seen what Yuka's been doing? When he says no, she says she'll take him to see for himself...

Yuka's still obsessed with working, and when Takako calls her to dinner, she doesn't respond until Takako says in frustration that if she doesn't eat, she won't have the energy to work. Hearing that, Yuka goes off hurriedly to eat.

Ryo decides to go see Toru. When they meet, he tells Toru how Yuka has been busy creating wings non-stop in order to keep her promise to him. Ryo says that he'd always wanted to protect Yuka and her purity and child-like features made one want to ward off all bad things from her, to keep her in that innocent state. Yuka, understanding what they felt, had respected their wishes and keep her questions and problems to herself. But Toru has never saw the need to protect Yuka and showed her a reality that they had all tried to shield her from. It made Yuka happy, as it's the first time anyone had treated her like a normal person. Ryo says he now understands that what Yuka needs is not protection... and so the only one who can save her is Toru.

Toru says that Ryo has over-estimated him and that he does not have the ability to show her reality, nor does he have the right. He says that he is not a strong person. Yuka understands what unselfish love is because it's something that she has received from Takako and Ryo. But it's not something he can give her, nor is it something he can accept from her...

Ryo argues that what Toru's afraid of is something that everyone fears. But that with trust, one can move forward and work it out. He returns Toru's candies and pager, saying that he must hold on to that as Yuka believes that when she finishes, she can use his mahoo no beru to call him back. He tells Toru that no matter what, he has to go back to where he grew up and he'll be able to understand...

Ryo is walking along with Machiko and he thanks her for alerting him to Toru's whereabouts. Machiko tells him that she has made up her mind to remain there and not return to Tokyo. She says that she used to think that her hometown was boring and unchanging and saw Tokyo as a place where dreams come true. But she realises now that hopes and dreams cannot be found everywhere in Tokyo, and she finds it more peaceful there, and she's a better person there. So she's decided to stay on to seek out her life's direction. She holds out her hand to Ryo, and he takes it, telling her to "ganbatte"...

Toru returns to the orphanage and in the back yard, finds a field filled with wings interspersed Yuka's genki candy. He takes one of the wings and hurries over to find Yuka...

On the way, he passes a construction area, and a cable loosens, dumping a load of metal cylinders onto him.... At the same time, Yuka, in her workshop, drops the wing she has been working on.

Ryo goes over to tell Takako the news of Toru's accident, but says that they should keep it secret from Yuka for now. But Takako makes up her mind to tell Yuka, and when Yuka comes out, she tells her to get changed quickly and they're going to see Toru.

When the three of them arrive in the hospital, they find Asako and Ooya there as well. The doctor comes out and says that they've done their best but it's too late, and they should go in to say their last words to Toru. Takako tells Yuka to go in but Yuka still doesn't understand what has happened to Toru.

When Yuka goes into see Toru, he's tells her he's going to die.

"To heaven...", she murmurs.

"No, even if I die, I will remain inside your heart..."

He pulls her into his arms, and as she's leaning against his chest, she starts to follow his heartbeat.

"When my heart stops, you won't have to use the mahoo no beru anymore..." He holds up a piece of her wing sculpture that he has in his hand and matches it to the single-wing sculpture on the window sill - so that a complete pair of wings is formed...

He says softly to Yuka "arigatou...." and then his heart stops...

Takako sees Yuka's doctor, telling him that she's worried about Yuka, as she hasn't cried or anything, and just sits there in a daze. She says that perhaps Yuka's not capable of comprehending death. The doctor tells her that after facing the pain of death, Yuka needs time to readjust, and advises Takako to just stand by her and trust Yuka's strength of heart.

Asako is packing up Toru's stuff in his apartment and she finds a letter in the wastebin.

Ryo decides to go to Osaka. He says to Takako that he feels bad for deserting her at this time but he feels like it's something he has to do, and he must find a new start for himself. He says that spring is now here... and then asks Takako if Yuka's okay, and Takako says that she's holding up well, much better than they'd expected and she has faith in Yuka.

Yuka's in her workshop, thinking about Toru not being in heaven, but in her heart. Her thoughts turn to her father, but she can't see to hear him from the sky anymore...perhaps her dad is also inside her heart.

Asako tells Ooya of her decision to transfer from the Move to work in the news bureau. Even though the position is not as good as the one at the Move, she wants to be true to herself and feels that she should be working there instead.

Asako mails Toru's letter to Takako, and she brings it to the workshop to Yuka.

Toru's letter:

I apologize for not keeping our promise but I feel there is something I must tell you. You once said that you wanted to become a bird... I've thought about those words over and over again, and about the meaning behind them. Perhaps it is because you believe every person has wings other than yourself, maybe that is why you want to become a bird. In your heart, you feel that you are somehow different from other people, so that is your way of wanting to become like everyone else. But who really has wings on their back? The wings are actually in one's heart. So in your heart, you too have wings. And you've turned your wings into wings of art for everyone to see...And in doing so, you have given me salvation. You used your purity to mend my broken wings. Your wonderful smile and beautiful works helped me recall my own forsaken purity. You named your sculpture Love ("ai") and taught me what love was. I thank you, and hope that you will keep our promise to continue creating your work, no matter what happens. Creating works that belong to yourself... for yourself.

As Yuka is reading Toru's letter, tears are pouring down her face. She says softly:

"Arigatou gozaimasu, kore kara mou ganbarimasu..."

The ending scene is of Yuka's exhibition ("Orihara Yuka's World") and inside, there are many different types of wing sculptures, beautifully displayed. On one wall are mounted the photos Toru had taken of Yuka in her workshop, and there is a table in front that has a jar of Yuka's genki candy, inviting people to take as many as they like.
