Yuka follows the man into the living room. Meanwhile, Machiko has noticed the cameras and is trying to leave, but the man starts to move in on her and she screams. Hearing her, Yuka rushes into the room, but is dragged back by the other guy and the two girls end up cowering on the bed as the guys advance upon them. Toru (who met Kotou in the streets while he's looking for Yuka) arrive in the nick of time and the two of them rescue Machiko and Yuka. Outside Machiko is still crying and in shock, but Yuka doesn't seem to be fully aware of the implications of what happened and tells her that everything is okay now and the bad guys are gone. Hearing her, Kotou asks Toru if she comprehends how dangerous their situation was. As Toru walks Yuka back, Takako comes running up to them and slaps Yuka in the face! Back at home, she tells Yuka in very strong language that it's reprehensible to do what Machiko did and that the guy who prepositioned her is even worse. Yuka asks if embracing is not allowed between men and women, but Takako explains that it is allowed if you truly love each other. Takako says it's the second time she'd ever hit Yuka, the first time being when she was coerced by a friend to steal from a shop when she was in grade 4. Takako calls to thank Toru, telling him that Yuka's like a child and doesn't really understand the complexity of her actions. She tells him that she was glad to hear him say the other day that he didn't pity Yuka, but asked him not to see her again. Takako picks up Ryo at the police station, and he looks really roughed up, and he just apologizes to her for giving her trouble and then goes off, saying he wanted to be on his own. Yuka's told by Asako and Ooya not to do anymore wing sculptures because they're too similar and they need more variety. Yuka then goes with Asako to a café. Yuka makes a comment about how people around her seems to be acting strangely of late, and Asako asks her if she's considered that it's because of her, because they've never met someone like her before. She tells Yuka that Toru is working on a very important project at work and must not be bothered by Yuka. Sekawa is discussing with Komiya about Touyama accepting the position of chair for Yuka's steering committee (they seem to have some complicity going on between them...) and she mentions the bribe that she has set up for him... Ooya passes by and hears her words. Yuka's in the park, trying to get inspired and run into Ryo, who's looking really bedraggled and they sit together, watching two kids playing in the sand. They reminisce about how they used to play in the same way, and she gets up to go to the children, but when she turns back, Ryo's gone. Toru's recruited the reporter to help with his investigations on Touyama, and the reporter (he's so slimy!) seems to know all about Toru's history with Touyama, saying that Toru wants vengence. Asako walks in and Toru quickly hangs up. She gives him some documents on Touyama's assets, saying that she wants to help him out. Asako mentions how Toru will be able to return to the news agency if he writes a really good article on Touyama, but he just makes a sarcastic comment that she must consider news reporters to be of a higher class. Asako tells him seriously that she wants to be with someone who she can "fly" with, and says the person she wants to be with has been damaged badly by his childhood but is still strong enough to get over his hurts... she tells Toru that she loves him, and then moves in to kiss him. He just stands there, not moving and not responding... when Yuka walks in on them. They freeze and look over at her, but she just smiles and tells Asako that she looks very pretty like that and they look very sweet together (!).. Asako becomes upset and tells her to stop, saying that "doesn't she understand she's hurting Toru with such words" and to stop smiling like that as "her smile will just bring everyone more pain"...Toru stops her. Yuka looks confused and hurt, and then silently turns away. Toru starts to go after her, but Asako stops him , saying Yuka's world is too different from Toru's and it won't work out... but Toru just answers that to him, Yuka's just a normal girl. Yuka goes to look for Ryo but Machiko tells her that the shop's closed today and he's not there... She notices that Yuka doesn't look well and asks her what's wrong. But Yuka just asks Machiko if her smile makes other people unhappy.... and then leaves... She's still wandering around when she runs into Kotou. Toru shows up at Yuka's house, but her mom says that she's at Touyama's. Toru asks to be allowed to get Yuka, saying he had something to say to her. Machiko tells Ryo about how Yuka had saved her that other night, and mentions that she was acting strange today. She tries to get Ryo to go look for Yuka but he says that Yuka doesn't need his help anymore. After seeing her in the park, he realised she has grown up, and it's because of Toru. But Machiko tells him that Ryo's the one who's been there all these years protecting Yuka and tells him to get up the courage to face her... Touyama is talking to Yuka in his living room. He tells her how his younger son's not like his older brother and that his hopes are on Ryutai which is why he doesn't want Kyutai to associate with her. Yuka isn't offended by his words, and just says that he must love both his sons a lot. The doorbell rings and as he gets up, she leans in closer and tells him that he has the same gentle smell as her own father... ("yasashii nioi desu..") Toru takes Yuka to his orphanage and shows her the store-room where he used to hide when he wanted to be alone. He tells her about his childhood, how his parent had suicide and how he hated them and the whole world after. That's why when Yuka mentioned his broken wings, it made him think back on his childhood; yet, when he saw the wing sculpture at the party, he saw himself reflected in its image, and he felt "saved". He hadn't wanted to come back here because there's only hate and pain here for him, but for some reason, he is able to be at peace while telling her his story. He looks at her and says he wants to see her smile, telling her that her smile won't bring unhappiness to anyone. He says that his former self didn't have the strength to face her smile, but now he really wants to see it... She is frowning in concentration as she ponders on his words, and he lifts his hand up to touch her cheek... she feels its warmth and saying "atatakai", she breaks into a smile. He pulls her into his arms and as they're hugging, Yuka says that she can hear his heartbeat, and he asks her if she can hear what his heart is saying. She looks at him and says that it's the most important thing: "heart-to-heart" communication ("kokoro to kokoro desu"). Ryo goes over to Yuka's house to look for her but Takako tells him that Toru's gone to get her from Touyama's. Ryo asks Takako if she really trusts him, saying that he won't trust him unless Toru tells him straight in his face that he loves Yuka. Yuka looks up at the sky through the skylight in the shed and says to her dad that she feels very blessed right now. She says to Toru that her father is watching over her right now, and that she can smell his warmth, and it's the same as Touyama's. Touyama is talking to his secretary on the phone, telling him to go ahead with the arrangements for Yuka's project (so he's accepted the chairmanship). The secretary tells him about Toru's background and who his father was... - End of Episode Nine - |
