PURE Episode 2

Yuka gets really good media reviews from the press conference, and the media all hail her as a genius. Still, Takako doesn't want to show the news clippings to Yuka but Ryo doesn't understand at first, until she asks him to think about what Yuka had meant by those words she said... She thinks the whole incident was unpleasant for Yuka and she doesn't want to remind her of it. Yuka comes downstairs, and is a little surprised to see Ryo there so early. They get a call from the media requesting an interview but her mom turns it down. Before she leaves, she reminds Yuka not to pick up the phone and to just use the answering machine. Takako is surprised and a little disturbed to see Yuka depart from their routine as she leaves, and reminds her that she hasn't told her about the weather yet, but Yuka seems a bit distracted and just says "..no..." Alone in the house, Yuka's thinking back on the press conference and wandering why she had blanked out that way. She says to the dad that she suddenly heard birds singing in her head, and for a moment, she felt she really had wings and could fly. Ooya is revelling in all this press attention on Yuka, saying that with everyone else calling her a genius, when they reveal her mental handicap, it will be a big coup for them. He gives Toru her address and tells him to go work on it. At the hair salon, Takako's still fielding calls from the media, and she confides to her co-worker that she's worried about all this press attention, because even if it's complimentary right now, it won't be that way once they find out she's mentally unstable, and she wishes that she'd never let Yuka accept the award. At Ryo's restaurant, everyone's also talking about Yuka's media coverage, and Machiko suggests that they throw a celebration party for Yuka. Ryo agrees and goes off to phone Yuka. The phone rings and Yuka comes out but remembers in time that she's not supposed to pick up. She hears through the answering machine that it's from the press requesting an interview. Ryo calls next, and she picks up the phone, and agrees to go to the celebration party that evening after Ryo assures her that she won't need to give a speech. Meanwhile, Toru is trying to call her and gets the busy signal. As she leaves that evening for the party, she sees Toru outside her house and they go to the park. His pager goes off, and she says to him that she now knows why they have these chance encounters, pointing to his pager and says it's because of his "mahoo no beru" (magic beeper). She then goes on to say that she'd been thinking about him and that was what set his beeper off, so that he knew to come looking for her. He explains to her that it's not what she thinks and shows her how it works. He starts to talk of her media coverage, and realises then that she has not seen it, and he shows her the newspaper he has brought with him. Yuka tries to read it but tells him that there are many words she doesn't know and asks if it's writing about her failure at the conference. He tells her that it's all complimentary, so she's happy again and gives him this big smile. At The Move, Asako is asking the others about Toru's past and they tell her that he used to be this hotshot reporter at the current affairs bureau of the news agency but he wrote some sensitive articles that upset the big boys and that's how he got transferred (demoted) to his current position. Yuko asks Toru what he does for a living, and then remembers how he had a camera last time and says that he must be a photographer. He kind of evades the question, saying "..uh.." and then tells her that he works for a publishing house. She suddenly remembers about Ryo's party and gets up to leave, asking if she can see him again, and when he replies maybe, she says that she'll use his "mahoo no beru". She gives him a candy before she goes. Komiya is at the publisher's (the group which also owns The Move), Sekawa-san, and they're discussing Yuka.. (So she was the one who'd leaked the news!) After she leaves, he calls Ooya at the Move... In Ooya's hands is a copy of Yuka's medical report. At the hospital, Yuka's talking to the doctor about Yuka. It turns out that the reason Yuka always looks up at the sky when talking to her father is because when he died, her mom didn't want to upset Yuka and so just told her that her father has gone to the sky. The doctor tells Takako that with all the new things happening to her, Yuka's probably going to go through some changes herself, and that the most important thing is to accept this reality... not just Yuka, but also her mom. Yuka's medical report lands on Toru's desk and he's reading through it. He reads that Yuka's mental processes is at the primary-school level, and also that she never actually went to secondary school. Ooya goes up to Toru and comments that he expects a really hot report from Toru, but he replies that when you interact with her a few more times, you realise that she really isn't that different from other people. But Ooya tells Toru that Yuka has the"star quality" to excite public interest. At the celebration party, they're talking about how diners are commenting on Yuka's sculpture in the restaurant and and accidentally mentions her media coverage. But she doesn't react much, saying only that she guesses they've all seen it... and she's a little embarrassed by it. Seeing how she not only knows about it but also is not bothered by it, they're all relieved. As the party wraps up, one of them unknowingly asks her to say a few words, and Ryo shoots a concerned look at Yuka but then she gets up and says what she was supposed to say at the conference - "arigatou gozaimasu, kore kara mou ganbarimasu" and they all cheer her on. Toru goes to Yuka's house the next day and as he goes inside, he notices all the little reminders that are posted up. He sees her mom's message about not letting in strangers but asks if it's ok for him to be there, but she says that he's not a stranger, but a good person and her friend. At work, Takako's on the phone with Ryo and from their conversation, realises that somehow Yuka's seen the article (Ryo had assumed that Takako was the one who showed it to her) and they wonder who it was... Toru tells Yuka that he's here to write an article on her, and she wonders if it'll be like the other reports, but he tells her brusquely that he's only interested in writing the truth, and it'll only be positive if that is what's true. She takes him to her studio, and he's impressed by her work and takes a lot of photos. At one point, she asks to try his camera and when he gives it to her, she snaps a quick shot of him. He continues to take pictures of her while she's working, but a sudden gust of wind dislodges a pile of loose paper strips that she's tearing up for her work, and she runs around holding her arms out to "catch" them... he takes a quick photo - but then she stops and tells him indignantly that that was just nothing ("nashii")... she says it in a really funny way and he bites back a smile, and says that he can't use it anyway because she moved too fast and it's going to be blurred. They're picking up the paper scraps together, and she turns to him and says that it's the first time she's seen him smile. He asks her why her sculptures all have wings on them, and she looks worried and asks if it's strange, but he tells her that it's not, and that it's actually quite good. Ryo is still thinking about who it was that had showed Yuka her press coverage and his co-workers comment that the more they see the two of them together, the more they seem like real brother-and-sister. Machiko adds that when Yuka starts dating, Ryo probably come on strong with the protective big brother act. When Takako returns home, she finds Toru in the studio with Yuka and throws him out in anger. Yuka's shocked by her mother's reaction, but argues that he's a good person and has helped her a lot. She sees that Toru has left his scarf behind and defying her mom, she runs out to return it to him. Yuka finds Toru standing on the side of the street, smoking. She hands him his scarf but he makes no move to take it, and she wraps it around his neck for him. She gives him another big smile and thanks him for interviewing her. The next day, everyone's going about their routine, unaware that catastrophe is about to strike. Asako delivers the new edition of The Move to Ooya-san and he looks in satisfaction at the leader on the cover, which says "The truth behind the New Age award winner... swan or ugly duckling".... - End of Episode Two - |
