What is DPSSMC?

The roots of education are bitter,
but the fruit is sweet.

Division Pilot Special Science and Math Class (DPSSMC) is a like a mini-school for grades four to six that specializes in science and math courses. The "special class", as we fondly call it, is under the supervision of the main school, Virac Pilot Elementary School (VPES), which is located at the heart of Virac, the capital town of Catanduanes. Although DPSSMC still follows the same curriculum as that of VPES classes, DPSSMC has a more advanced and faster pace of learning. It has only one section per grade which enables the teachers to closely monitor each pupils' performance.

The admission to the class was competitive. A grade three pupil can enter DPSSMC on his/her fourth grade by taking a written examination and making it to the top 25 of all the examinees. There might be some other qualifications. But for as long as I remember, in special class, a pupil had a to have at least one talent such as being able to dance or sing, whichever you do better. Ok, I think just being able to do some acrostics would do.

Ang ganda ni Ching!

Believe it or not, of all the three years in special class (from grades 4-6), grade 4 was probably the hardest. Talk about trying to fit in with your classmates and getting intimidated with the "bright ones." Despite the competitive atmosphere in class, the three years in special class surely made a lot of fond memories. Who would ever forget the people who had seen your nose drip or even saw you go to school with torn socks?
