More About the Literary Works of Judy Belsky:

Abraham and Sultana is a book of poetry (not yet published) which chronicles the immigration of her grandparents from Turkey to the US in the 1920's. A section of the manuscript won the 1988 Rachel . .Castelete Prize in Literature (IVRI-NASAWI)

Since the completion of this book, she has begun a prose memoir on her family history, growing up in the Sephardic community in Seattle, Washington. She reflects on what inspired this writing in the essay How To Write A Memoir. In the essay she relates how profoundly her grandparents' lives affected hers. How she sees them as heroes, who had the inner strength to combat the prevailing shame and dissipation to religious values during the great migration to America. She uses them to cut through the stale history of American Jewish literature in which Orthodox characters are silly, marginal or dying. How can they be dead? She asserts. They live in me. They provided the lens through which I know G-d. Through which I discover myself.
