"When have I not?" Avanon grinned back wickedly. "What do you have planned?" "Well, since Heranel has been off searching for new runners, no one has been back here, right?" "Right...." That was why Avanon had even been in the stables, it was the only place he could be alone. "I thought we could scare the runners up, and send them towards the group of weyrling dimglows over there." He gestured with a nod towards the lake. "How will he make them got that way?" Avanon asked. Runners on stampede couldn't be controlled, they just went. Nassue slipped out from between the hay bales and dissapeared for a few minutes. When he returned, he had his canine, Lighting, on a rope. "I've taught him how to herd, he'll be able to send them that way." Avanon grinned again. "Lets do it."
The two boys moved in a stooped position, so as not to attract the dragons attention, and broke into the runner padock. With one quick slap, the runners were stirred up and broke through the fence, with Lighting a black blur, herding them towards the lake. There came the startled roars of the dragons and shouts of the weyrlings, all frantically scrambling out of the way. A few managed to take off, but the others were just running. A loud roar, not frightened but angry, came from overhead.
It was Starrth, a bronze dragon from the weyr. Avanon and Nassue retreated and tried to run from the stables, but W'mar, Starrth's rider, was in their way. "You two are in a lot of trouble." He had seen the whole thing. The bronze circled the herd and settled them as W'mar dragged the trouble makers inside to the Head Weyrlingmaster H'nal. A blue visitor outside saved them, but only temporarily. H'nal stepped outside to speak with the blues rider, then returned, looking sternly at Avanon. "That is a Searchrider," he said, pointing outside. "he has come for you, but after the stunt you two pulled, I don't know if I should let you go." Avanon became desperate. "Oh please let me go! I didn't mean to hurt anyone if I did! I just wanted to spook them a little!" H'nal laughed, "I was only kidding boy, go get ready, you leave today!"
