Salamanders from cooler climates bury themselves in soil or mud at the bottom of vernal pools or ponds, going deep enough to resist frost and maintain an even temperature. During this hibernation period the salamanders' metabolism is greatly reduced, therefore reducing the amount of energy burned in the effort of just staying alive. Failure to hibernate will not only affect their ability to breed but it may also reduce the animals' life. Hibernation is an important part of a salamanders' life cycle, something we may not fully understand. |
