DragonBall
is about an innocent, young and pure hearted boy, learning about the
the meaning of good versus evil. The character of Gokou
is based on an ancient Chinese mythological figure, the Monkey King,
however, the story isn't exactly the same as
the
from the Chinese myth. Gokou's journal begins when he meets a bluish
haired girl called Bulma, where
Bulma tells Gokou all about the story and the magical powers of the
seven DragonBalls. The legend, or the myth of the seven DragonBall
is that once all seven DragonBalls are found and collected, a fierce
Dragon (Shen-Long) appears and the Dragon can grant you a wish. With
Bulma as Gokou's only companion, they soon find themselves in all
sorts of trouble when they start to encounter monsters, armies or
other villians who are also in contention to find the seven DragonBalls.
Gokou's
journal does not stop there, along the way, he meets new friends such
as Yamcha, Puaru,
Oolong, then eventually he meets
Master Roshi, or the Kame Master,
Chi-Chi and Ox
King. Master Roshi plays a very important in the story of Dragonball,
which his significance carries on to DragonBall Z and DragonBall GT.
Master Roshi is an olderly but well known martial artist. He figures
that Gokou has the potential and 'what it takes' to be the become
the greatest warrior on Earth, and accepts Gokou as his pupil. Later,
Krillin joins the Kame Master
as well.
Some of the main villians Gokou meet in DragonBall are the Gurume
Army, Lucifer from the Castle of Evil Spirits and finally Red Ribbon
Army. The Red Ribbon Army, a powerful group of peopel who use artificial
intelligence to create robots (androids) is also an important part
of DragonBall as the story moves on, as you will see more
of them in the next two DragonBall series. Gokou also meets Piccolo-Devil,
the evil replica of Piccolo, and Piccolo too becomes an important
part of DragonBall Z.
DragonBall comes to an end when Gokou joins the 21st Tenkaichi-Budoukai,
or the world class martial arts tournament. Where he has his first
battle with young Piccolo. After the tournament, Gokou marries Chi-Chi
and Gokou is still only 18 when DragonBall has ended. Then a brand
new, more exciting DragonBall Z begins.
