As you step through the gateway, your are hit with a blast of hot air, causing you to pull back out of the gateway. Carefully this time, you step back through. The gateway cloes behind you, and you study your new surroundings. The ground is scorched and black in some places, but most of it is just bare dirt. There are no trees here, just jagged hills of rock and dirt. The strange hills are blocking a direct path through them. As you near them, you notice a tiny path, just large enough to squeeze your way through around the hills. As you start to walk, the path leads you farther and farther down, untill the hills tower over you, enclosing you. Your only way out is forward, or back the way you came. A small glimmer off to your left catches your attention. You stop, and try to find what was glimmering. You shift back and forth, hoping that the light will catch whatever it was again. After a few moments, you sigh, and continue your journey. A few paces later, you see the glimmer again. Frusterated, you brush your hand where you had seen it, and black dust falls away under you palm. You then start using both hands, scraping dust away. You pick up the corner of your shirt and scrub the spot you had cleared. You step back, and gasp. Silver and gold. Spots of the two shiny metals stare out at you from the cleaned spot. You spin around and begin to scrub with your hands, and then with your shirt. You come up with the same result. Gold and silver. These hills were filled with precious metal! You continue your journey down the walled in path, ever now and then, stopping to scrub a little soot from the gold and silver laden walls. As you look at where you had been scrubing, you notice a small, palm sized peice that caught your attention. It was different from the other peaces of gold and silver, because this one had the two blended together, as if melted. You begin to pick at the sides, trying to dislodge it. After a few minuets of work, the chunk of swirled gold and silver falls into your open hand. You clean it on your shirt untill you can see your reflection in it. You smile, quite pleased with the results. After admering your handy work, you place it in your pocket and then continue your journey. As you walk, the path begins to lead your back up, causing you to be able to see over the tops of the walls. Off in the not too far distance, you notice a large mountain, smoke spewing from the top. The mountain tip seemed to have been cut off, and you can see the air wavering above it, giving off intense heat. After some more walking, you come to a small clearing where the rocks and soot had been cleared away leaving the ground bare. Even the ground itself has dots of metals here and there. The gold and silver glint in the sun's light, making the ground seem alive with color and light. In adition to the metals in the ground, you notice a few things scattered about it. A huge pile of precious gems and stones lay heaped together off to one side. There are even a few toys to go with them. |
A few dead, and scraggly trees are grouped off to one side of the dirt clearing. You notice a strange lighting in the trees. With a screem of burning, a fire ball streaks past your face. You yell and hit the ground with a jarring impact. "Just stay where you are!!" A voice yells out from the trees. You move only enough so that your head is faced towords the voice. A fairy, dressed in red from head to toe. Her hair is like flames, sticking up and waving side to side. In between her palms rest a ball of flame, ready to be trown at a moment's warning. At her side stands one of the biggest dragons you have ever seen. "Stand up, slowly!" The fairy shouts. You stand, placing your hands away from your body, making sure that the fairy sees that you don't mean any harm. You tell her that you passes Fae's test, and that you mean no harm, that you just want to see the dragon. The fairy lowers her fire ball, and then lets it puff out. "I'm sorry," she says looking away, a little imbarested. "I have always had a quick temper, and when I saw you looking at the dragon's things, I just reacted. I... I apoligize. I hope you can forgive me..." she trails off, and looks up at you hopfully. You tell her that you will forgive her, and that it was a mistake. "I really am sorry!" She says sincearly. You nod, and tell her you forgive her. She sighs and then smiles. "Oh, by the way, my name is Rina. And this is Utopia. She was adopted from the Refuge. Come on, we'll show you around." She leads you back over to the clearing. |
She points out the nest, and the toys, telling you they are for the dragon. Utopia turns to you, and speaks for the first time "These are all my things that Deborah got for me." You ask the big dragon is she has a mate, and she shakes her head. "No, not yet, but maybe sometime in the future." You ask about your surrounds. "Oh," Rina responds "Well, let me tell you about it..." "The mountain had always spewed smoke, but never anything more. They called it Mt. Korisan. The land around it was flat as far as the eye could see. It was as if Mt. Korisan had risen out of the ground by magic. There was a small mine of gold, and silver. There were even a few precious gems found. A few miners found the place, which was owned by no one. I, too, was one of the miners. I am a metal smith, and was looking for a few choice peices to work with when it happened. "All of a sudden, the ground began to shake, and Mt. Korisan was spewing smoke like I had never seen it. With a roar, the mountain began to spew fire and lava. Everyone fled, running as fast as they could. I flew a safe distance away, and watched the lava flow for a while. After it stoped, and cooled, I flew back down. I didn't want to abandoned my only sorce of silver and gold. Everything was twisted into rivers of it, and into chunks. I cleared an area to work on, which is the clearing you see now, and then I began to working on getting more of the preciouse metal out. I used the metal to make my creations. I sold a few, but I never really needed the money, I made my works for pleasure. None of the other miners ever returned. "After a few weeks of living on my own, I became very lonly. I left my new home in order to try and find someone who I could befriend. I ended up outside of Deborah's forest. She offered me the position of a Keeper to a dragon, and I accepted." The fairy shrugs. "And thats it in a nut shell. Kind of a condensed version." Suddenly, a thought comes to your mind. You reach into your pocket, and pull out the peice of gold and silver, holding it out to Rina. Her eyes widen, and her hands flutter above it, as if wanting to hold it. Utopia leans over her keepers sholder to look at it. "Its so beautiful! Where did you find it?" you tell her back in the strange path. She nods. "Those hills were formed after the eruption." You press the heave piece of metal into her hands, telling her to keep it, and to make something beautiful out of it. Her eyes sparkel with joy "I will! Thank you very much." She sits still for a few moments, and then the metal in her hands begins to waver, and then melt. Held by some unknow force, the now soft metal sits just above the fairy's hands. She moves her fingers, and the metal moves with it. For a long time, she works, pulling the metal this way, then that, never letting it cool. Soon, you begin to reconize the shape it was taking. A dragon. Rina set the now cool dragon on the ground in front of you, where you had been sitting with her and Utopia. The rough image of a dragon in flight glints gold and silver in the light dimmed by the smoke. "It is not done yet, I have just compleated the shape. Next will come the detal work, but that will take some time, and I need a rest." Standing up, taking the dragon peice with her, Rina turns to Utopia. She holds the half done dragon out to her, and Utopia breaths softly on it. You watch in amazment as the peice begins to melt again, and she starts doing detail work. You watch as she works on the little dragon... |

Cradle Song by: Sarojini Naidu From groves of spice, O'er fields of rice, A thwart the lotus-stream, I bring for you, Aglint with dew, A little lovely dream. Sweet, shut your eyes, The wild fire-flies Dance throught the fairy neem; From the poppy-bole For you I stole a little lovely dream. Dear eyes, good-night, In golden light The stars around you gleam; On you I press With the soft caress A little lovely dream. |
Dragon Lullaby by: Jane Yolen Little flame mouths, Cool your tongues. Dreaming starts soon, Furnace lungs. Rest your wings now, Little flappers. Cave mouth calls To dragon nappers. Night is coming; Bank your fire. Time for dragons To retire. Hiss. Hush. Sleep. |
A few poems that I think the dragon will enjoy. |
by: Anne McCaffrey The little queen all goldne Flew hissing at the sea. To stop each wave Her cltuch to save She ventured bravely. At she attacked te sea in rage A holder man came nigh Along the sand Fishnet in hand And saw the queen midsky. He stared at her in wonder For often he'd been told That such as she could never be Who hovered there, bright gold. He saw her plight and quickly He looked up the cliff he faced And saw a cave Above the wave In which her eggs he placed. The little queen all golden Upon his shoulder stood Her eyes all blue Glowed of her true Undying gratitude. |
