.How To.

Feeling a tad lost? All those links, menus and buttons seem a little too overwhelming? Well don't worry my pretties - it's really easy to get lost in here!

Well it is if you don't know what you're doing. Just sit tight and I'll explain how the site works - it's navigational structure is absolutely unique! At times the following tutorial may seem a bit complex. Don't worry - it really isn't. It's more a case of being a lot harder in explanation than it is to actually do. You'll soon be nipping around the site with ease.

When setting up dctv the idea was to create something just that little bit different from the average 'expage' DC site. With this in mind, the sharper amongst you may already have noticed that the site actually represents a TV set - for obvious reasons. It has it's own miniature 'screen', channels and a side control panel. Heck it even has a 'remote control'! But before you
go clicking here there and everywhere willy nilly, listen up. Thanks to the way dctv is set up you can press any link at any time to move from one area to another without fear of your Dreamcast crashing (you can still try though, tee hee!). Firstly, toward the left-hand side of

the main screen there is a 'Control Panel' (and yes I will be keeping the annoying TV set analogy going for the duration). You are already familiar with this, having just pressed the 'How to' link to get here! This menu is a straight-forward list of 6 hyperlinks containing options related specifically to where you are within the site, of the type that can be found on virtually every other website on the 'net. Try clicking between each of the options now. The links in this particular menu all revolve around the Home 'Channel'.

Next up: the 5 remaining Channels. Knowing you as the cheeky little monkey that you are, you've probably already visited the other channels before I've had chance to explain what they're all about! Even so you'd still do well to read on - the attention is in the detail. Just like a regular TV, dreamcastv has a number of channels - 6 in all, which can be reached by pressing the appropriate button at the bottom of the set. These buttons are always visible nomatter where you are within the site (bar the Top Sites and Webring) so switching between the different channels ls always a breeze. In a second I'll invite you to choose a channel below. When you do, you'll see the top of the screen transform. This is deliberate.

Regarding channel hopping; those already familiar with DreamArena will know all too well that connection to the net can sometimes take an eternity. However upon selecting a new channel, please wait until every frame has FULLY loaded before moving on, for two reasons:
  • 1.) Once a channel has loaded fully it will be 'remembered' by your DC and reload almost instantly the next time you visit that channel, and
  • 2.) You'll most probably need every frame anyway, in order to navigate quickly through the site from channel to channel.
Please remember also that once you select a channel button below, this tutorial will become replaced by a new page...OK get ready to press the 'workbench' button, but remember to come straight back or you'll make I angry. "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry".

! To return here you must press the 'home' channel button followed by the 'How to' link in the Control Panel.

Welcome back stranger. You were gone a long time and I was waiting here all alone! As you now see each channel has a Control Panel and sky blue homepage all it's own just like the main 'Home' homepage. Easy isn't it? You'll need to return here like that to read the remainder of this guide...Humour me OK? At this point you may be wondering

what the point of all this 'channel' business is about (a thought not unfamiliar to myself). Well it's so you can work easily on building your own website. Believe me once you get used to it you'll be glad you took the time to read through this tutorial. This site is a
great tool for DC Webmasters! Now (if you haven't already done so) try each of the channel buttons in turn then when you're finished return here for more goodness. Because now that you know how to change channels, it's time to get down to the nitty gritty - the Top Bar...
