A new babe cries, his mother sighs; His father beams and wipes his hand Across his teary eyes. Who says a man can't cry? Scraped knees, wet eyes, Mom's kiss applied. His Dad says, "Don't you baby him, He's got to realize That boys just do not cry." First day in school with big boy rules. Tears in Mom's eyes, Dad's face aglow, Son choking back his fear Because boys do not cry. His first fist fight, a show of might, With blackened eye, and swollen lip, His tears hid deep inside Because boys do not cry. A young man's rush, his first real crush. His love is spurned, his heart is torn. He sheds a tear in shame Because men do not cry. His wedding day, heart on display He vows his love to her always With glist'ning smiling eyes. Who says men cannot cry? With bleary eyes he says goodbye Beside the graves of Mom and Dad, Tears drowning him inside. Why can a man not cry? Full circle come, he holds his son As tears of joy stream down his cheek. Who cares what they might say! Who says a man can't cry? Copyright ~ Barbara A. Duits~ 2000 |
