Dream A Little Dream ...

04/25/02 - I’m feeling pretty good, even though my allergies have been driving me crazy
lately. My voice seems to come and go on a daily basis. It’s pretty bad when you
can’t even sing along with Stevie Nicks ... and her voice is way low. I’m starting
to take the decongestant pills every few hours. It seems to be helping a little. Oh
gees ... I’m talking mundane. Next thing you know I’ll be writing about taking the
garbage out again. Woe is me.

Actually, I think I’m feeling more calm than anything. I’m pretty sure I’m not
bored. My mind is still on the numb side though. Maybe that’s good. Maybe
that’s what’s keeping me calm.

I’ve been catching up on reading the book reviews. I get them e-mailed to me daily
from
Powells Book Store. The name, Richard Flanagan, seems to ring a bell. But, I think I’ve gotten him mixed up with Richard Brautigan of Trout Fishing in America fame. Anyway, this Flanagan fellow seems to have written a book that has peaked my curiosity. It’s called Gould’s Book of Fish: A Novel in Twelve Fish . There’s something fascinating about reading a book where each chapter has been printed in a different color. I’d try to explain the plot, but it appears to be totally indescribable, a high quality/quantity of imagination has been used. Then there’s another review on a book entitled In A Dark Wood by Amanda Craig. It’s about an actor who’s wife and his mother (the mom died when he was 6) were both novelists. He discovers a book called North of Nowhere which was written by his mother all about a quest which, you got it, the actor decides to take for himself. I’m thinking this is probably like many other “quest” stories. However, the reviewer appears to be very impressed with the author’s style. That means I could probably learn something by reading this one. Plus, I like stories that have writers as characters. I’m going to order them both. While I wait for them to arrive, I will be reading an oldie, I’ve just started it. Don’t judge me by what I read though, I’m as eclectic in my reading tastes as I am in everything else. The book was a “blockbuster” best seller in 1978 ... Scruples, by Judith Krantz. This is really a stretch for me, very mainstream, something about luxurious lives, Beverly Hills, yada yada. I already found something interesting on pg. 17, Earl Grey tea with a shot of V.S.O.P. (brandy). That actually sounds delightful. Earl Grey (a blended bergamot tea) is one of my favorites. I shall have to try this the next time I have a scruple (a moral or ethical consideration or standard that acts as a restraining force). Yeah, I’ve come up against one or two of those.

It’s getting close to the weekend, and I think I shall try to continue on in a calm
manner for a few more days. But I’m also thinking that a week of calm is about
all I care to experience. I’m not old enough to do calm for long. I should still be
able to conjure up an adventure here or there. Yes, add that to next week’s To
Do list.
