09/10/02 - Eureka ... And, believe it or not, I met someone who called himself ... Eureka Man. He wandered into the Pub one night, looking totally normal, at first. It wasn’t long before we got an inkling of something, well, rather different about him. Especially when he went out and got his headpeace sort of a hat adorned with all sorts of bric a brac, probably meaningful, to him anyway. It was rather magnificent in a strange sort of way. A picture would be appropriate here, and actually, I have one. I asked his permission and all. But, there is something wrong with my computer right now and I’m having a heck of a time downloading pictures. Why the hell did I get this broadband connection? Ever since I’ve gotten it ... oh well, I’ll save those complaints for another entry. It was Jam Night and Eureka Man started heckling our dear Ace. Well, needless to say, Ace can take care of himself and has a retort for just about everything. And as you would expect from someone like this, Eureka Man also had words of wisdom. Well, not exactly. He was mumbling something about the black hole of the eye. Do remember, however, that Eureka Man was a patron of the Pub. Speaking incoherently is nothing new there. We’ve all done it. I did, in fact, find his acronym for WISE quite interesting: Way I See Everything. Something to think about? Here’s my Random House College Dictionary definition of Eureka: 1 (cap) I have found it; motto of California. 2. used as an exclamation of triumph at a discovery; attributed to Archimedes on discovering the principle of specific gravity. Archimedes is in my dictionary too, Greek mathematician, physicist and inventor. I can just see him yelling Eureka when he discovered gravity, yeah, right. But maybe so. If he had yelled, Oh My God, which one would he have meant? Last month I yelled Eureka myself. I finally found a new place for me and the boys to live. So far, so good. It’s a nice place. And, it does indeed seem to be the place for a new beginning. There’s a charm here. Nothing grandiose, though I no longer mind that. This charm is much more subtle though. In the old days, back when I actually gave a damn, my decorating skills were complimented with words like cozy and quaint (agreeably odd). That’s what I’m aiming for again, comfortable, cozy and quaint ... rather like myself? I can live with that. |
