DSQ National History

On January 13, 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded  on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C.  by twenty-two undergraduate women. Our founders were dedicated  to establishing an organization committed to the promotion  of high cultural, intellectual, and moral standards among its  members for the benefit of society as a whole.

Over the years, Delta Sigma Theta maintains its commitment to the  community by defining itself as a sisterhood based on public  service. Delta has established a long and glorious history of  educational, cultural, political, and social service in the  public's interest. To maintain a bond and unified committment  throughout the sisterhood, Delta Sigma Theta operates under a  " Five Point Thrust ".

Educational Development
       Economic Development
             Physical and Mental Health
                    Political Awareness and Involvement
                          International Awareness and Involvement

Today, our great sisterhood consists of almost 900 National and  International chapters. Delta Sigma Theta is the largest predominantly  Black fraternal organization in the world. Sustained by the bonds of  sisterhood, the challenges and successes of over 95 years inspire over  200,000 members today, and assures us that our organization and its  efforts will continue making history through every member's unique  contribution of womanhood, skill, spirit, and commitment.

With a history so rich and so profound, it is our duty as members of  Delta Sigma Theta to uphold the defined commitment to our communities  as we grow in our beloved sisterhood.
