Catherine told him that if he left with yound children and an unfinished house, she wouldn't write to him once, and she didn't.

Dennis was one of the guards of Belle Boyd, the Confederate spy, who is buried in the cemetery at Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The story about this guard duty is" that Belle Boyd appreciated his consideration, and thanked him prettily and profusely when he did not insist on standing by her during her visits to the the 1864 (circa) equivalent of the Powder Room. Dennis had been ordered not to let her out of his sight, regardless. Belle answered nature's demands in privacy as far as Dennis was concerned.

There is a question as to whether Dennis was born in Danby, Rutland Co., VT or Hamburg, Erie Co. NY.

Notes for CHARLOTTE CANFIELD:
Soon after the first trains were sunning between Buffalo and Toledo, Charlotte took a trip "out West" to visit her brothers Allen, Silas, and Lafeyette who had moved with their famillies to Wood Co., OH. She stepped, with carpet bag in hand, from the train in Elmore, OH with many tales of this amazing journey. While on the train, the conductor had ordered her to remove her carpet bag from the seat, not once, but several times so a woman standing could be seated. She refused not once, but several times. When the conductor finally asked her to please put that carpet bag on the floor so this woman can sit down, she said, "Yes sir, I will and I would have done it in the first place had you asked me decent." She added, "There was good stuff in that bag, had that man known it." Charlotte was bringing her sister-in-law some Star soap bars, the first soap bars made in Buffalo.

Notes for BENJAMIN BUXTON:
Benjamin, with his gun and dog, wlaked from Ct. to the neighborhood of present day Buffalo, settling first on land, where the US Steek (?) Co., is located. His dog disappeared and six weeks later scrached on the Buxton family door in CT. Malaria was prevalent near Lake Erie, so Benjamin later traded his land in Buffalo for land near Hamburg, NY, where he and Charlotte raised their family. He had such a good memory for details the when he was near 90 yrs. old, he settled some land disputes by remembering hwere certain original courses were located.

He had hoped to study medicine and read many medical books. He set bones succussfully, including his son Roswell's leg that was broken while playing in his Uncle Allen Canfield's saw mill.

Silas was a Christian man, simple in his faith. He was impressed with the Quakers among whom he had taught school in New York state. Silent grace was usual at his table. He doubted that any church with a system of bishops belonged in a democratic country.

The people of Webster Twp., Wood Co., OH, were dubious when an Army officer, of dubious morals, undertook to recruit volunteers for the Civil War. They finally asked Silas to organize a company and Company K. OVI came into being. Silas Sprague Canfield, Captain of Company K, OVI, was mustered into the Union Army on September 19, 1861, at Findley, OH. Silas was captured September 20, 1863, at the Battle of Chickamauga, GA.
