TICUL

Back to Mexico

In January of 2000, I was invited to go on a mission trip to the Yucatan with Roswell and Marietta Presbyterian Churches.  I was elated.  Just thinking about the possibility of seeing all my friends in Xocenpich gave me chills.

This was to be a different experience for me, especially since I did not know any of the people going.  The youth minister and I had a common friend who put us in contact and through him, I met Mr. Ben Persons, who with his wife, Frances, coordinated
everything.  Everyone on the trip made me feel welcome from the beginning.  And I feel as though I learned as much as I contributed.

The morning after we arrived in Ticul, Yucatan, we eagerly received instructions from Mr. Ben Persons regarding the day ahead.  We were split into several groups involved in different worksites.  Ben had his work cut out for him keeping us all in line.

Here, Pastor John Wells and I "preach."  Well, he preaches and I interpret.  This was my first experience interpreting an entire sermon.  And I will gladly do it again when the occasion arises.  John and I make a great team.  He avoids the use of any $3 words.

Tzucacab was one of the worksites.  Geronimo is the pastor of this church and he is seen here, preaching in a weekday service.  Roofing and flooring are being added on the building next to the church.  That building will be used for church school and public school.

We were fortunate to be able to dine out for every meal and experience many Yucatecan dishes.  This occasion was special as we were able to dine with Severo and Hocabab Ek.  Severo is the pastor of the church in Ticul.  His mission includes the surrounding areas ... some as far away as 120 kilometers.
