Chapter News
Airport Directories Again - Persons who attended the February meeting received a copy of the 1999 Florida Airport Directory.  However, Bob Sutherland has now received a box of the 2000 Florida Airport Directories.  See Bob to get your free copy of the 2000 Directory (especially if your 1999 directory is already worn out...)

Treasurer's report:  Be sure to get those 2000 dues paid. See Sandy Bowen to pay up.

Flying, Food, and Fools - Feeling like a fool?  Got a bad case of spring fever or March Madness?  We've got just the cure for what ails you.  Flying is more fun than a psychiatrist and cheaper too.  To further everyone's mental health, Chapter 108 will be holding a picnic on April 1, 2000 at the Ruckel Airport.   The time will be determined at the March meeting, but show up around lunch and bring a side dish.  For those of you that wondered, this is not an April Fools Joke.  There really is a picnic planned.  A few fools may show up, but that seems to happen regardless of the date...

Wanna see Cliff's Dimples? - The March meeting will feature Cliff Nunnery's presentation on building aircraft from aluminum sheet metal.  Cliff will explain some of the basics of building his RV-6.  Should be a good show.

Young Eagles Fly-in.
Smile!

Ten planes showed up.

Hold on!
On February 21, 2000, Presidents' Day, EAA Chapter 108 held a Young Eagles Fly-in at Destin Airport.  Ten airplanes showed up and flew 61 kids and several parents.  Ray Seip really had things set up well at the airport and with Pensacola approach control.  Kudos to Ray and Gerry for all the hard work.  This was definitely the largest and most successful Young Eagles day in several years.

Perhaps the chapter can do even better on International Young Eagles Day, June 10, 2000.  Spread the word and start recruiting young fliers today!

Get Met.  It Flies?
Seen over Crestview, FL
We saw this on Wednesday, March 8th as we departed Crestview as Catfish Lead (going to Wednesday lunch).  We asked him if he had been to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras festivities.  He said "No."  He had left San Diego 8 days ago enroute to New York.  After that Joyce and I were too non-plussed to ask any more questions.    Cliff Nunnery

Jim Grahn's T-18
Jim Grahn's T-18My airplane is a Thorp T-18, built by Grover Rahiser of Ocala, Florida.  It took Grover 12 years to build - ending with the first test flight (flown by Vernon Thorp) on 8 June 1988.  I bought it on 25 September 1999.  It currently has 168hrs TT.   It has an O-320 and wood prop. At 3K feet, 2350 rpm, I get 155 mph.  The avionics are simple with one radio and one VOR. I'm in the market for a hand-held GPS.  It is based at Yellow River airport in Holt where I fly any fair-weather weekend I'm in town.   Jim Grahn

Shady Bend Fly-In
Jungman
Nice Bucker Jungman in military livery.  The paint job has to be seen to be fully appreciated.  The gloss is outstanding.

Lewis Gun
Replica Lewis gun on what I think is a Boredom Fighter.  It is very well done and looks extremely realistic.

Don with Rotary
Don Hawley with the piece d' resistance.  A three-rotor Mazda conversion which develops 250 hp.  Shown without the reduction drive, it's an extremely small package.  Don and Richard had their own adventure with carburetor ice on the way down.  Get them to tell you about it.

Richard Sohn told me about this event.  Mainly a fly-in for folks interested in Mazda Rotary Engine conversions.  That Saturday , March 4th, was such a pretty day and Joyce and I needed a mission.  Of course we paid for it on the way back, but we had ground speeds of 205 and 210 knots on the way down.  Shady Bend is about 15 miles northeast of Cross City nestled among some rather large trees.  Interesting because it disappears when you turn base.  It's a 3000 ft strip with the trees cut for an over-run at each end.  The  over-runs are interesting also because they are only about 100 ft wide.  Things were made even more entertaining by the 15 knot crosswind.  Not being dummies, they arranged the festivities at the north end and told everyone to land on 18, all the better to grade landings.
We were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed an extremely good hot dog and hamburger lunch.
