Southern California  is a dangerous earthquake prone region. The danger in living in south California is due to the SAN ANDREAS FAULT in earthquake language. There are other faults also in Californea region. They may be as dangerous as the San Andreas fault. The danger of loss of life can be reduced by better building design and layout of furniture in the house. Heavy furniture like bookcases, file cabinet, kitchen cupboards, electronic items are vulnerable. Improper anchoring, locking and placing of all vulnerable items may cause death and huge loss of money.

Earthquakes may be unavoidable, but damages and losses are not. Take care for each item in the house, office, schools and all other facilities. Carry copies of all important documents, specially insurance papers. Prepare an emerncy plan for facing disastrous earthquakes.

A stich in time will save nine.
The greatest number of large earthquakes take place in Alaska,
but mostly in less populated areas.

The strongest earthquake in North America measured 8.6 to 9.2
on March 27, 1964, is called Good Friday earthquake.

A three month long series of earthquakes in years 1811-12 took place
along the New Madrid Fault in Missouri measured 8 in magnitude. These
eartquakes were felt all over the eastern states of U.S.

Earthquakes occur on faults on earth's surface.
Earthquakes strike suddenly, without warning at any time of the year and at any time of the day or night.
Due to the Northridge, California, earthquake of January 17, 1994, economic loss has been estimated at $20 billion. Fortunately, only few lives were lost. The California earthquakes tested building design and construction practices, as well as emergency disaster plans.
Although most earthquakes occur on the west of the Rocky Mountains, and the most violent earthquakes have occurred in the central United States, all 50 states and all U.S. territories are vulnerable to earthquakes of moderate to high risk.
