Ecosig is the hardy evergreen ecology special interest group. It is a subset of AJET, which is a subset of JET programme participants.
This group was established in 1996 to heighten environmental awareness and education amongst JETs and others in Japan. It coordinates a number of projects, including a bi-monthly newsletter, an environmental library, publication of the JET Environment Action Guide and Down To Earth English, and nationwide Earth Day events.
Ecosig members are people who are passionate about the environment. Many were active in their home countries in environmental groups and are using their experience to promote environmental awareness in Japan. As teachers we are perfectly placed to provoke thought about the environment and promote sound green practices. We can use our role as cultural ambassadors to teach about green issues back home, and how problems like pollution are being tackled overseas. This is "grassroots internationalisation" in its most literal sense!
Many JETS have ample spare time: it is up to us to use this time constructively. Shortage of volunteers hinders how much we can achieve, so please consider joining us or supporting our activities. There is nothing like planning an Earth Day event to make that downtime rush by!
Please do not hesitate to contact us with articles, ideas, criticism, news. This website is designed to provide up-to-date information about environmental issues both in and outside Japan. It is still in its infancy and we encourage contributions from anyone, anywhere so that it may grow to be big and strong!
Please direct comments, questions, queries, expressions of interest etc to our website coordinator.
