PRESTON NORTH END
Make a Splash for Sir Tom!
THE FA Cup fifth round clash between Chelsea and Preston North End on Sunday 17/02/02  is a fixture dripping in history.
It was in 1955 when Sir Tom Finney, or the Preston Plumber as the England winger was affectionately known, raced down the right at a waterlogged Stamford Bridge to collect a loose ball.
A desperate lunge was coming in from the left. But Tom had controlled the ball and was off before he could be tackled.
The image of Sir Tom evading that tackle, leaning on one arm, an arc of water spraying out the opposite way is one of THE all-time footballing action images.
So it is fitting that for Sir Tom's 80th birthday on April 5, Preston North End football club and PNE fans are working together to raise funds to turn that image into a 12 foot bronze statue of the Splash.

Wee bit of history
(As this page will only be updated three times in the next seven years - the content will mostly be facts and figures, history ...etc. - OK?)

25th April 2000 - After almost 20 years in the lower divisions, Preston North End are back as CHAMPIONS of division 2!
Preston North End started as North End Cricket and Rugby Club in 1863, playing most sports.
In about 1879 football (soccer) was added to the list. A vote was taken in 1881 to concentrate the clubs efforts on football. A few weeks later PNE FC joined the Lancashire Football Association.
Best Ever Team?
In 1999 the Lancashire Evening Post ran a poll to find out the "best ever" post second world war PNE side - as voted by the fans. The top 11 were...
Alan Kelly Snr.
Tommy Docherty
Willie Cunningham
Mark Lawrenson
Joe Marston
Sir Tom Finney David Beckham
Sir Bobby Charlton
Peter Thompson
Howard Kendall Alex Dawson
A few of the players are slighty out of position, and IMHO it would be better to choose only players in the "best ever team" who had spent at least one full season at Deepdale. Oh well...
