Adolf

Gender: Masculine
Language
: German, Danish, Dutch
Etymology:
Adolf is the modern German form of an Old Germanic name Adalwulf (modern form, Adolf). It means “Noble Wolf” from “adal” (noble) and “wulf” (wolf) (Adolphus is the Latin form).

History:
The old German name Adalwulf developed into the modern German Adolf (via Adelulf), as well as the Old English Aethelwulf and the Latin Adolphus. . Aethelwulf died out in England, however, soon after the Norman Invasion of 1066. Adolf survived, however, in Germany and Sweden.
In the 20th century, German dictator Adolf Hitler has probably forever tainted this name. It is rarely used today.
