Adolphus

Gender: Masculine
Language
: English
Etymology:
Adolphus is the Latin form of an Old Germanic name Adalwulf (modern form, Adolf). It means “Noble Wolf” from “adal” (noble) and “wulf” (wolf).

History:
The old German name Adalwulf developed into the modern German Adolf (via Adelulf), as well as the Old English Aethelwulf and the Latin Adolphus. Aethelwulf died out in England, however, soon after the Norman Invasion of 1066. It flourished, however, in Germany and Sweden.
The name was reintroduced to England (often in its Latin form) in the 17th century, when the German royal family of Hanover became the rulers of England (George I, 1683-1760).

In the 20th century, German dictator Adolf Hitler has probably forever tainted this name. It is rarely used today.

The English pet name Dolly (for Adolphus) could be found in the 19th century.
