Hobart IN; The 2001 Hobart Sandlot Football League season kicked off with an exhibition on September 1.  The two teams played a double header beginning  at 5:00 p.m. Hobart time.

The first game was a close one down to the end, but crucial turnovers cost Team 2 the game.  Team 1 was able to capitalize on an interception and a fumble to take the first game.

The second game of the double dip was nothing like the first.  Team 2 may as well have not showed up.  Several turnovers and little or no defense cost Team 2 the game.

The turning point of the day may have been when
Jake Cleek suffered a hand injury during the middle of the first game and was used sparingly for the rest of the day.

Tom Phelps looked as good as he ever has in week 1 dominating Team 2 defenders and adding an interception.  Andy Wronko was a pleasant surprise by adding some extra offense for team 1, as if they needed it.  Josh Neace was unstoppable down field and Bob Glover led the offense to scoring drives on every posession never turning the ball over.

Team 2 lost a lot of athleticism with the injury to Jake Cleek and they simply couldn't compete for the rest of the day.
Mike Arana looked rusty on defense, but a rusty Arana is better than most people in mid season form.  The offense was firing on all cylinders prior to the injury to Cleek, but could never get back on track afterward.
