I grew up in the Santa Clara Valley which is located at the southern tip of San Francisco Bay. For many generations, Santa Clara Valley was famous for being among the richest farmland in the world. It's fertile, flat floor was covered in orchards of apricot, prune and cherry, and the finest wine vineyards, as well as a broad array of vegetables. From the side of any of the mountains which surrounded the Valley, one could see the variously strewn towns every so far apart which serviced the many farmers and ranchers; small, tidy communites with names of Spanish saints, or some natural occurance, such as Willow Glen, Sunnyvale or Los Gatos (Spanish for "the Cats," a low gap in the coastal mountains where mountain lions were often spyed). The Santa Clara Valley was an idyllic place, known as " the Valley of the Heart's delight." I was born in 1948 and it was in this Valley where I was raised working in the orchands and fields from the day I could walk. I hunted rabbit and squirrel in the hills and learned the lore of the local Indians, not many of whom were much left around then. I went to school with all the other farm kids, it's yearly schedule dictated by the ripening of the crops, not a bureaucratic schedule. Though I can't remember when I didn't study the fine arts, I uniquely, as I grew older, also developed a keen interest in the emerging sciences of radio and electronics. At the end of World War II, the Santa Clara Valley experienced the beginning of an immigration of folks to the few military and scientific industries left here by the War. The Cold War demanded newer and better technology, and so more and more people immigrated here to fill and expand this technological hunger. The immigration turned into a flood and by the time I graduated from high school, there were no farms to farm, no open hills to hunt in. The "Silicon Valley" became the world renown center of the modern technological kingdom. My interests in radio and electronics served me, I have been an independent computer consultant, among other things, all my adult life. I love the world I grew up in. I hate the world I live in, but being very good at what I do, and enjoying it as much as I do, where better can I ply my trade? |
