1979 AMC SPIRIT
This link is all about my street/strip 1979 AMC Spirit.I've owned this car since I was 15 years old,and it is the one car I would never get rid of.Not much is left of the original car I got in 1989 except for the roof, floor, and quarter panels. Everything else has been replaced over the years due to either: failure, rust or collision damage. It's transformation into the car it is today started about 8 years ago, when the stock six cylinder spun a bearing. The transmission didn't work very well, and it also needed body and interior work,so I parked it-for the next seven years!I worked on it on and off (mostly off)during that time until it was finished enough that I could drive it.By the spring of 2001,I had finished installing a new engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, shocks, fuel system and some used tires, so it was driveable-if not exactly pretty!Over the next seven months I installed a junkyard-salvaged interior from a 1980 Spirit DL,with a console from a Spirit Limited; and welded in some patches scavenged from a car in the junkyard. Then I finished the bodywork in my driveway and painted it '91 Corvette white in a rented paintbooth.
My best time at the dragstrip, so far, is a 9.04@80 mph in the 1/8th mile. That should improve once I install a new rearend with posi-traction.I'll probably use a Ford 8.8 out of a 87-93 Ford Mustang 5.0.It's the same width, and by using Ranger pickup axles and drums, the wheel bolt pattern will remain the same. All I have to do is cut off the factory 4-link suspension mounts, and weld on leaf spring perches and I'm done.Anyhow, I guess that's it.I'll update this site when I make some changes to the car.Feel free to
E-mail me if you have any questions about these cars.I always enjoy having the opportunity to help someone.
