UNIT HISTORY
The JROTC program at East High got it's start in the fall of 1977 by being cross-enrolled from the program at Bartlett High School within a short while, interest in the program at East grew to the point where in 1981 a separate corps was needed at East High.  The current program is now run by MAJ Roger Weber and SGM Victor Magwood.
The corps at East, the T-Bird battalion, is based on a normal battalion structure consisting of a Headquarters, staff section (S-1, S-3, S-4, S-5), and two companies, Alpha and Bravo.
Promotions within the Battalion are conducted by the President of Board who holds promotion boards three times a year.  LET 1's must pass a written test to receive their first promotion.   Senior Cadets appear before the board for all promotions.
Participation in the extra-curricular activities at East High include a vary diverse selection of Activities for the Cadets.  Special teams include: Regulation Drill, Saber, Color Guard, Volley Ball, Orienteering, and T-bird Elite Physical Fitness Platoon.  Program also participates in an Annual Formal Military Ball, Dinning Out, Fall Field Day, Fall Social, Senior Dinner, Spring Awards Ceremony, Spring Camp Out and numerous community service.
Annually the T-Bird Battalion participates in a Summer Camp held in various locations throughout central Alaska.  The camp is designed to take advantage of the natural wonders of Alaska.  Cadets camp out for a week and cook their own meals.  Events include Land Navigation, Orienteering, Rapelling, Rock Climbing, White Water Rafting, Canooing, and Mountain Biking.
Rifle Marksmanship is another part of East curriculum during the school year, cadets qualify with presicion air rifles at a ten-meter range.
Over the past several years, cadet enrollment has continued to grow in numbers and also in quality, with almost 25% of the corps of cadets being members of the Honor Roll.  In 1995, the East JROTC was awarded the prestigious Honor Unit with Distinction and has maintained the Honor since.
