Civil Emergency !
Flooding in and around Whakatane
July 2004
After several days of heavy rain, the Whakatane River catchment area was completely waterlogged.  We then had 48 hours of non-stop solid rain which had nowhere to go.
Looking upstream from the nearby stop-bank. Older now obsolete stop-banks are covered by the floodwater
Looking downstream as the swollen river rushes  towards the main river bridge
Walter Park remained dry but Bridge Street was impassable and the Awatapu subdivision was evacuated as the stopbanks threatened to breach
A new 'river'  between Garaway Street and Bridge Street
The flooding continued ....
