Dum Dums song
reviews
The kind of day I've had
Kim_lvz_stu: Ok, this is the song we all remember as
the kick off to the most amazing tour ever!
Everything
Me&MeOnly
(aka Jenny): An energetic
little song with a chorus so catchy it buries itself deep in your
brain and refuses to leave. An amazing song when it is performed
live too,it really gets the crowds going into a full scale
moshpit. It's lyrics are ones which almost every teenager on the
planet can relate too, talking of the complications we all
experience in life.Simply brilliant.
Kim: what can be said apart from THE most
amazing song ever!! The 1st single, that kick started their
career.
Caught me in a trap
Until my ship comes in
Me&MeOnly
(aka Jenny): A slow, down beat
song which really pulls on the heart strings. It's lyrics
speaking of those times when you can't help but feel lonely and
unwanted, is something that we can all relate to. But, of course,
the DumDums can't help but add in their bit of unique Rock 'n'
Roll towards the end so that it, quite splendidly, goes out with
a bang.
Can't get you out of my thoughts
Kim: aaaaaaah! this brings back memories of
last summer! an excellent song.
You knock me off my feet
Sal: 'You Knock Me Off My Feet' is another of
the tracks which any Dum Dums gig is not complete without. It is
a different style to most of the other tracks on the album, and
because of this, it really stands out as an excellent song. The
"woah, woaaah" section is another big favourite at gigs!
Killing me with kindness
Lonely hearts company
Kim: This is officially the coolest song ever
written!
You do something to me
Me&MeOnly: Yet another catchy chorused song from the
DumDums. Centered around a character called Wendy Halverson, it's
a slightly different approach lyrically. You'll find yourself
humming the tune for hours afterwards. The lyrics are filled with
witty little phrases "she's the ruler of the prozac kingdom"
being one of them, phrases that will end up scralled across
biology books across the country
Hole in your heart
Kim: This song has the best lyrics ever! That
josh is a genius!
Army of two
Me&MeOnly: A rock song about wanting to stay with one
person, that's a rarity that the press may try to look down upon,
but it would be hard to do so with such a powerful song as this.
The sincerity of the lyrics is obvious when you listen to the
emotion in Josh's voice, it will bring a lump to your throat on
many occasions. It's the lack of manufactured perfection in His
voice which makes it so beautiful and heart felt. The power of
this song really hits you making the silence after it's end, so
empty and desperate. Just a beautiful song.
Setting sail
Kim: Wow! What a bonus track that was! One of
the most beautiful songs ever written!
Losing your mind
Sal: 'Losing Your Mind' is one of the songs which
describes how work can be frustrating. The tune is pretty simple,
and stays quite constant throughout, apart from a small section
in the middle which shows off Steve's bass line. As usual, Josh
is also backed up with some beautiful harmonies from Stu and
Steve!
Mr. Executive
Sal: For some reason the start of this song always makes
me smile. Josh says "Hello, Mr Executive? May I have a few
words if it's not too much trouble?" in a posh voice before
launching into the first verse. As the title suggests, this song
is about a man who has changed from becoming more high in the
company. It has a very strong tune, and the mid-section is quite
Madness-esque in some respects.
Lucy's about to beach
All hooked up
Sal: Like many of the Dum Dums songs, this is a slightly
depressing moral tale, cleverly disguised with a poppy melody. As
Josh said at SBE, "It's about this guy, and he kind of has a
crush on this one girl, and he's the kind of guy who goes around
sleeping with a whole lot of different girls. Now, don't aspire
to be that, guys! And it's about when he tries to make it out
with this uh, girl who's far too chaste."...which says it
all really!
Equal spread of sunshine
Sal: This is one of the more mellow songs that the band
have done, which suits the mood. For once the loud guitars don't
kick in at the end, and it is a nice contrast to the other songs
on the CD - You Do Something To Me and All Hooked Up On You.
Whether or not the rumour about Josh recording this lying on his
back in a dark room is true, I don't know!
Boyband
Sal: You guess that this is not an ordinary Dum Dums
song when it starts with Josh going "Hey ladies in the house!
Wanna hear you scream!" It isn't about emotions such as love
or depression that many of the other are. Instead it is a
complete piss take of the many boybands cluttering up the charts
at the moment. If you heard it without listening properly, you
might well think that it actually was by a boyband, as it has a
very catchy melody and beat, and an extensive range of harmonies.
However, it's only when you listen to the lyrics that you fully
understand. "We can't sing but we've got great teeth and
hair" is one of the lines which could be related to quite a
few bands around at the moment!
Plastic flowers
Sal: Although 'Plastic Flowers' was only a b-side
to CGYOOMT, it is many people's favourite Dum Dums song. This is
probably because of the infectious melody that is evident
throughout, which is backed up in places by Stu's harmonies. The
higher parts that Josh sings are meant to be too high for him to
sing live which is a shame because this song rules!
It goes without saying
Sal: This is a song that SHOULD have been on
the album no matter how good their excuses are! From the
incredibly catchy chorus and "do do do doooos" to the
guitar solo, 'It Goes Without Saying' rocks (especially live). As
it is about divorce, it is easy for many people to relate to.
Robot boy
Sal: 'Robot Boy' is one that never fails to get the mosh
pit going at Dum Dums gigs due to its loud guitars, thunderous
drumming and rougher vocals. It is another song about working
life, and comes complete with another infectious chorus (Do they
EVER write bad songs?!) There is also the odd comedy moment with
Josh's screams and little speech at the end!
I can't stand it
Sal: The first line of the song, "It seems my
friends we've drunk our lives away" sums up the tune very
well! It has the sort of catchy melody that you could easily find
yourself singing after one too many! The lyrics start off
reasonably cheerfully, but later go on to become depressed behind
the happy front the melody provides.
Running away
Sal: This song is perfect for whenever you are
feeling a little depressed, and need some calm, reflective music.
Like some other slow songs that the Dum Dums have written, it
starts off very gently, but later on the guitars kick in to give
it a heavier feel. The lyrics are also very poignant, and create
a mood that everyone can empathise with.
You want it, you got it
Who knows the way?
