S Sound
Animated picture of the letter S, Snake, Star

Now that your child has mastered the short vowel sounds you are ready to move on to the consonant letters. This is the letter S. The sound that the letter S makes is the same sound that you hear at the beginning of the word snake and star.
Follow along with the picture above. When you see the letter S have your child make the sound the letter represents. Then have them say the words snake and star.

If you have reviewed the vowel sounds and they know the sound the letter S makes, you may try blending them. Here is an exercise to practice with. This also should help them begin to understand that you read from left to right, top to bottom, if you do them in this order.

Have your child make each sound as shown:
s

The next sound to learn is T

Don't forget to review...
Short A Sound
Short E Sound
Short I Sound
Short O Sound
Once you have mastered this section, watch for our next consonant letter to appear. We are going to try to debut one letter per week.
You should always review the sounds you have already learned before you go to a new sound.
