I. Q & A Please tell us who you are and where you are from.
My name is Phil Ye. I was born in Beijing, P. R. China in 1969. My father is a senior
engineer. My mother is a physician. As the only child brought up in this warm family, I
was well edified and educated in my early years. I carry on my parents' merits, such as
honesty, industry and frugality, that benefit me both in my childhood and adulthood. After
5-year elementary education, I entered high school in 1981. I performed so well in my
academic study and daily life that I was honored as an All-Round-Developed student. In
1987, after passing an exhaustingly competitive entrance examination, I enrolled in the University of International Business and
Economics, the foremost training college for foreign trade specialists in China. My
major was International Business, which required me to grasp the basic ideas and
practicable convention of economics and foreign trade. I was always able to keep my scores
within top 15% of the class. During the golden college time, besides my academic study, I
often assisted to arrange activities for visiting foreign students and teachers to campus.
From then on, I began learning the primary idea of business education in some other
countries. Participating social work was one of my interests. I worked as a Liaison
Official for the 11th Asian Games held in Beijing in 1990, during which I took care of
life and competition arrangement of a Philippine judo team.

Briefly discuss your career
progressing to date. What type of job do you see yourself in immediately after receiving
your MBA? What are your long-term career aspirations?
Upon my graduation from university in 1987, I was employed by China National Technical Import and Export Corporation (CNTIC),
the largest trader in technology transfer and equipment transaction. My major was project
management, which involved in foreign government loans and some export credits. As
frequently as needed, I kept contact with State Planing Commission, Ministry of Foreign Trade and Cooperation, domestic
and foreign financing institutes and banks (e.g. Bank of China, German Kreditanstalt für Winderaufbau, US Export and Import Bank), famous multinational companies
(e.g. Siemens, Alcatel, Babcock, UOP, Motorola), commercial
departments of some foreign embassies to Beijing, as well as businessmen from all around the world. It is obvious that
various types of projects in different fields have enriched me. International conventions
should be applied to every contract of mine. The INCOTERMS
and UN Convention on Contract for the International Sale of Goods are the guidelines. World Bank and Asian
Development Banks general regulations on bidding are strictly abided by in
tendering projects.
After years of work, I feel imperative to adjust my career orientation. Based on my work
experiences, I expected an upgrade through a systematic education. That was the main
reason to join an International MBA,
a bi-continental and bi-collegiate program. With the International MBA background, I will
focus on multinational business development. Pioneering new market, product promotion,
subsidiary management are my career concentration. In the long run, I will strive to
ascend to the peak of my career. After my years of hard and successful work, I want to be
a head of area agent of an multinational business, supervising the operation of
subsidiaries in different countries and directing the business orientation of local areas.
Working in high management level will be my career development direction.
I have the confidence that I will succeed step by step along within my planned track, no
matter how difficulty it would be. |
How can you justify your confidence
in your potential success? To
be objective, here is excerpt from an evaluation of my behavior in an Assessment Center
held by a famous multinational electronics company
originated from the Netherlands, whose business ranks No. 1 in Europe and No. 2 in the
world.
"... When we
compare your performance with group average, you scored relatively high (part of the top
group). ... You reached high appreciation of the assessors on the competencies.
You took charge, directing progress and encouraging open two way communications, delegated
and initiated actions where appropriate and gave constructive support to others, praising
their contributions in an effective way.
Your communications were concise and clearly structured, you described the benefits of
proposals made and looked for common ground to achieve a win-win conclusion.
The group discussion scored very well. the competencies "Analysis and
Decisiveness" and "Leadership and Teamworking skills" scored the highest.
You listened actively and attentively when others spoke and built on their contributions,
made a strong impact on the team progress, sough to take the initiative and to take charge
of the situation and maintained effective when under pressure.
You scored above average in the interview. You were sensitive in making own views know,
set high standards for self and others and would not settle for "second best".
All competencies measured scored very well. You were able to convince the assessor. A job
well done.
Overall-well done, above average. After in depth discussions during the evaluation session
with the assessors, we all agreed to offer you a position ..." |

Discuss accomplishments which
demonstrate you potential for a successful managerial career Most of my accomplishments were achieved in my work in the past
several years. One was in an cooperation with Nanjing Expressway Ltd. Co., who wanted to
purchase traffic equipment amounting to US $14 million. In 1996 and 1997, I participated
in bid opening and evaluation of three Spanish bidders, and led an investigation trip to
Norway, France and Spain. As a sole representative of my employer, I took full
responsibilities in commercial part of the project team. After bid evaluation, I continued
to finalize the contract signing and applied for approval from authority. I was able to
coordinate the whole project team within almost one year of cooperation with our client.
In another case, I may hardly forget a toast from my first Israeli contractor, who
provides an edible oil refinery, in the contract signing ceremony. He congratulated after
mentioning hash discussion with me, whom he described as "Mr. No". Mr. Muller is
a typical Jewish trader and he is the most difficult counterpart I had ever met. As a
member of the project team comprised of technical people from enduser and my colleagues, I
directed discussion with Mr. Muller. I often debated drastically with him on contract
terms and clauses, besides I also invited technical people to expose the shortcomings in
his offer. Simultaneous attacks from both commercial and technical teams did work. Wars on
desk finally resulted in the signing ceremony of the first civil contract in 1996 after
the establishment of Sino-Israel diplomatic relations.

Tell us about the single greatest
influence on your life. I have
to acknowledge that it happened when I was just an elementary school student. The
influence existed and gradually directed my selection of university major and career, even
my decision to pursue MBA.
Just when I was seven years old, my father began studying English in a language teaching
program on radio. Mysteriously, I showed a strong interest in mocking the teachers
pronunciation on radio. I also drew the English letters on scratch papers. My surprised
father decided to teach me English from A,B,C. I might be gifted in learning languages. In
primary and middle schools, I ranked top five in English tests. This pushed me to study
English harder. My parents suggested me to major in international trade in university,
because of my excellence in English. By taking highly competitive exams, I realized my
dream and started a new chapter on college campus. Now, I consider my career improvement
as a success. Besides, I want to develop further for greater achievement.
All of those originate in a careless imitation and careful concern of my father more than
twenty years ago. I could not ignore the importance of this matter which influences my
life previously, presently and later on.
II. Academic Background
Graduate Study
In
1999, with several years of work experience, I attend the International MBA program jointly
hosted by University of South Carolina and Wirtschaftuniversität Wien (Vienna Economics and
Business University).
The acquaintance with multi-continental environments, contacts with both European and
American cultures and societies, as well as the cross-culture MBA program, make me more
than likely adapt to internationally oriented positions.
Undergraduate Study
I studied international business in the University of
International Business & Economics, the foremost college for
international business specialists in China. I was awarded BA in economics in 1991. |
