While The Original Series went into syndication during the early seventies, the popularity of Star Trek sky-rocketed (pun intended...)  In 1975, Gene Roddenberry and Paramount began discussions for starting a second television series, but soon turned their attentions to producing a major-release motion picture.  Star Trek: The Motion Picture hit the venues in 1980, re-uniting the entire cast from the original television series, much to the fans' delight.  To date, Paramount produced nine Star Trek movies in total, and there is a rumored special feature IMAX film in the works.
