If for no other reason than his 18-goal haul, Bierhoff was the outstanding figure of last season.(and add to that 10 assists, three efforts against the woodwork  and a hand in provoking  two own goals!)The German  was the only player to feature in all 34 matches. Though hounded by criticism, some of it less than generous, he always let his feet do the lalking, playing a key role in attack.here too, Zaccheroni was seen to be vindicated  for he always stood  by the player under pressure. Bierhoff didn`t let him down.Together, the two men have spent three seasons with Udinese, leading the club from the margins of  Serie A  to the big time in European football(when Udinese came third in the 1997/1998, it was the club`s best finishing position in the history). In his last season in Udine, Bierhoff  became the League`s leading scorer, with 27 goals.

With the German national side, which he now captains, he became champion of Europe in 1996, scoring the two goals with wich Germany ended the Czech Republic`s hopes for glory at Wembley. In Italy, prior to Milan  and Udinese, he played  for ascoli, where Pellegrini`s Inter had sent him on loan in 1991, and to whom he was then sold for a minimal fee.

Footballing commitments notwithstanding, he is currently busying himself with a correspondence course  in Business and Economics. He has two main hobbies:computers and Golf, which he playes with reasonable succes.he lives with his girlfriend Klara, a former model, just a stone`s throw from the San Siro
