Key Volunteer Network
Are you a caring person? Do you think you are mature and compassionate? Do people find you to be a good listener? Are you patient? Do you consider yourself a positive role model? Do you think you are supportive of the Marine Corps and their core values of honor, courage and commitment?
If you think you are, or can be, all of these things and are willing to honor rules of confidentiality then you would make a great addition to the Key Volunteer Network.
What is a Key Volunteer Network?
The Key Volunteer Network is the link for communication between the unit and the families. It helps keep the feel of community alive with the Marine Corps and the families. This is where people can go to get reliable information and referrals to resources on base and in the community.
Each unit has their own organization for their Key Volunteers. The Commanding Officer decides what areas would be best to focus on for their families. He then works with the active duty Family Readiness Officer and the Key Volunteers on how to address those areas. Each Key Volunteer must complete a training course and be appointed by the unit.
What is the mission of the Key Volunteer Network?
Common jobs of the Key Volunteer network are welcoming new families, keeping current rosters of family members, providing information and referrals for specific situations, passing down information from the command to the families accurately, and being there to provide friendship and support when needed.
Sometimes they also sponsor unit activities, create unit newsletters, and help with other unit activites as needed.
What are the different roles within the Network?
Commanding Officer - Their job is to oversee the work of the Key Volunteer Network and appoint a Family Readiness Officer and all Key Volunteers.
Family Readiness Officer - They are always an active duty member of the unit. They serve as the link between the Key Volunteer Network and the Commanding Officer.
Key Volunteer Coordinator - This is a spouse of within a unit who organizes and oversees the work of the Key Volunteer Network. They also are the link between the Family Readiness Officer, Commanding Officer and the Key Volunteers.
Key Volunteers - Spouses of the unit who have the most contact with the families. They work with the Key Volunteer Coordinator.
What is the Key Volunteer Training?
Key Volunteer training is open to all spouses of active duty Marines and civilians who work with Marines. Taking the training does not make you committed to participate in the Key Volunteer Network, but it is required if you wish to be a part of it. Those that complete the training receive a certificate of completion. These sessions are a great way to meet other spouses.
Training sessions include information on the Marine Corps organization, the Key Volunteer Network organization, roles and responsibilities, communication skills, organizational skills, resources available on the base and in the community, and much more.
On Cherry Point, you would contact Toni Hoy at 252-466-5779 to arrange to take the training.
