A brief word about the show in Cork (27th Dec). The band arrived onstage around 9.45pm and finished up around 11. The only "new" song performed was Paddy Kavanagh's "If you ever go to Dublin town"..at least giving hope to those looking for a new album (even it was only a covers album) The band could do with a few roadie's though..Paul was onstage trying to tune up his guitar for about 15 mins prior to the show yet still struggled with it throughout the show. Shane was sitting on a stool with drink holder attatched to microphone stand and walking off with a crutch. No new mwmbers have replaced departing popes with the line up now consisting of the drummer, bob, tom, paul and shane. The band's sound was pretty good though (better than Limerick a few months ago) they could freshen up the set with a few new songs, although we had fine renditions of "Poor Paddy" "Old Triangle" and "Greenland Fisheries" ...always nice to hear those. Anyone got a report of the Woods Band show in Dublin?
Ceilidh Cowboy

Sounds like that idiot stage diver in holland has injured shane because he stood for most of the gig then, no crutch needed until ...

Just for the record Shane was supposed to play  in Longford of Dec 28 but was cancelled week before the gig, what a pisser!!

- Popes Instrumental
- Body Of An American

The Show started at 0.15 h and ended 1.45 h. Approx 600 (?) spectators. Shane seemed to be in a good mood, making lots of jokes, but having the zipper of his trouser open! ;o) After the instrumental he came back without shoes and had to sit on a chair. Mr.Dowling should exercise the songs; he made more misstakes than Shane...They just had Drums, Bass, Guitar and Banjo. The sound was not very good, but Shane was great. A drunken fan entered the stage and pulled Shane from his chair and he fell down but kept singing lying on the floor!
Jan

The friday in zaandam was very exciting. Shane was in a good mood, but let us wait a long time. too long! An alcoholic has to do his job as well. There´s no excuse for this.
Christian Halangk

He was looking OKE (no shirt under his jacket)end in a good mood making jokes and conversations with the audience, still sitting on a bar stool. Also making corrections to the band about lyrics en backing up singing. Play time 23.10 - 00.25 our.
Frits

We had to wait a long time before shane was on stage, but finaly they get him out of his hotelroom. after 20min or something he couldn't longer stand on his legs so they put him on a bar stool. the atmosphere and the music were top!

A review on Shane's DJing at Death Disco by
HotPress
                             Shane gives spinning a spin

24 Sep 2002

Shane MacGowan, currently wheelchair-bound following a hip injury, plays a stormer at Death Disco
Shane MacGowan took a break from his recent live antics with The Popes to join BP Fallon at Eamonn Dorans for a DJ set.

Arriving on-stage in his wheel-chair the singer proceeded to play for over two hours opening with The Skatalites' reggae classic ‘Phoenix City’ over which Shane toasted into the mic.

The eclectic set illustrated his considerable musical knowledge and included songs from The Sex Pistols, Eddie Cochran, Junior Parker, Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan.

Although patently enjoying his pints and endless cigarettes MacGowan displayed none of the symptoms that characterised his recent Olympia appearance with The Popes when a fit of vomiting prompted a discussion on national radio concerning his health. Among those who phoned expressing their concern, love and support for Shane was his long-time friend Sinead O’Connor. It is believed that Shane is currently convalescing from the hip injury which has confined him to a wheelchair at Sinead’s Dublin home.

His set at Death Disco lasted into the early hours and a delighted BP Fallon commented: "It was genuinely an honour to have Shane especially since his set was so brilliant. To hear him singing with Elvis on ‘I Was The One’ is something I'll always remember with great warmth, a very special moment. As well as being uniquely gifted, Shane's a lovely man - we're damn lucky to have him around."

Shane and Alcohol... Friends or Foes ?
Siobhan Broome
shares her opinion  on the issue of vital importance:

Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan born on 25th of December 1957.  A man in his mid forties, is he doing well for his age?  Should this question even be asked?  Shane MacGowan is a household name, notorious for his drunken lifestyle.  from articles i have read I have realised MacGowan does not appreciate attention from the press, especially when it focuses on his personal life, although he always takes stories lightly and is never phased with tabloid gossip.

Alcoholism is an ugly and common occurrance in the western world.  How many homeless people have i spoken to who are dependent on alcohol?  Almost everyone of them.  How many have i spoken to who appreciate MacGowan?  All of them.  He has a unique skill for songwriting which strikes a cord among those who understand the things he writes about.  Alcohol, he has said, is a key part to his inspiration, when drinking is when he feels comfortable and ready to compose more beautiful pieces.

There are so many different aspects to MacGowan's writing and a song can be interpreted in many ways.  The stories in the lyrics enthrall the listener and keep them interested, not to mention the brilliance of the music.  From war horrors to painful relationships one thing I take from MacGowan's work is it is always concentrated on the average working class person, making the songs so familiar and easy to relate to.

Alcohol and drugs, both things MacGowan has experienced could be labelled as his form of escapism to where he feels best.  Isn't this the same for all of us?  If we are down we have a drink or a smoke to ease the pain.  Another form of relief we have is his music, although MacGowan probably doesn't share the opinion that his music is a solace.  When I put on a pogues CD I can get drunk on the music alone, butterflies in my stomach at the excitment of the lyrics and Celtic beat.  How could this man, along with the superbly talented musicians of the pogues/popes, have created such a brilliant pocket of music?

I don't like the fact that alcohol plays such a big role in his life, it's worrying and obviously damaging to his health.  however, it's not for me to criticise, i don't know the man, therefore have no right to discuss his personal life.  All i can say is that MacGowan's poetic genius has changed my musical appreciation and my look on life.

In her foreword she admits "After reading all those articles about Shane's last gigs and looking at those awful pictures I had the feeling that I was writing an obituary, especially after reading what Sinead O'Connor said. Let's just hope that she's wrong!" Let's hope you are TOO pissimistic (sorry, pEssimistic, of course), Irene ! Don't hurry to burry him. Angels are immortal...

Shane Really Opens Up to Crowd...
Rebel Irish singer Shane MacGowan gave his audience a bit more than they could stomach during a show in the Olympia Theatre over the weekend
.

12.09.2002
Here's a review of
Galway gig (http://smokesignals.blogspot.com):
But Shane and the Popes eventually did show. Sometime around 1:00, the bouncers cleared a path through the crowd for the procession of Popes to make their way onto the stage. They were followed by a man carrying an empty wheelchair...and after several minutes of jostling and shoving as impatient punters struggled to get a good vantage point, Shane appeared being carried by three of four bouncer types. After he was carefully lowered into the wheelchair, a pint glass of a clear liquid with a lemon slice was placed in his right hand. His left hand was busy working a cigarette. The mike was maneuvered into position and the show was on.
Unfortunately I didn't keep a set list - suffice to say that he played many of the Pogues most well known material plus understandably several songs from his recent albums. The highlight for me was his rendition of "The Oul Triangle" a beautiful song which now unfortunately always brings to mind the mental picture of three owls in a tree as rendered by a comedian in the comedy club a few years back. The wheelchair bound Shane was almost totally motionless throughout the set - almost like a dying man plugged into a life support machine that consisted of The Popes, a stage and a live audience. At least five or six stone heavier than he was in 1991, he is starting to resemble Brendan Behan or even Elvis. Every now and again he would mutter something like a "thank you" but that was about it for his interaction with the crowd. I heard later that he believed he was in Kilkenny.
I should also mention that the audience was the rowdiest crowd I've ever seen at a gig. This was accentuated by the layout of the Quays; the small area in front of the stage meant that everywhere near it became a moshpit. I can't remember the last time I had as much drink spilled on me. It was a bouncers nightmare, but much fun was had by all - particularly the drunk.
In a strange resonance with my post on Friday, while I was unabashedly making speculative conversation (i.e. chatting up) a girl at that gig, I was accused of being a negative person. I think I had just commented on how sad Shane looked...but it was hard to sound positive about him - maybe I should have said that it was great to see him still knocking out the tunes after all those years of drink and drugs...he's an example to us all.
I wasn't sure what to expect at the Shane MacGowan and the Popes gig on Friday night. I had heard he had sobered up and straightened out his life over the last while and that this was being extended to his live performances. I had last seen him in 1991 and at that time he was a disaster - stumbling on stage with a bottle of whiskey, incapable of delivering any song unaided. Neither I nor anyone else there that night would have expected that he would be still alive and performing 11 years later. Since the Pogues split, I haven't really kept up with his career but it seems to me that in that time Shane has ascended to a position that few others Irish musicians have ever attained in their lifetime - to the Irish of the generation that came of age in the Eighties he is a true Icon - a personification of a particular Irish spirit, a poetic romanticism born of the building sites, and drinking dens, loneliness, bedsits, emigration and persecution; a voice connecting directly with the spirit of Behan and numerous unknown working class Irish troubadours and barroom poets. And the drink, drugs, bad teeth and slurred speech are as much part of the MacGowan package as the music....tragic songs speaking to an audience that revels in a celebration of life and identity amidst the tragic; sang by a man prepared to chase down his own tragedy.
So the gig itself. Shane was preceded by two support acts - a lively folk duo (box and guitar) worked the crowd well before being followed by a splendid young rock four piece from Sligo (more about them in another post later). After that, we had a wait of what seemed like an hour during which we exchanged stories of shambolic concert appearances by Shane over the years. It was noted that the Quays management had refused to return the ticket stubs on entry, which we surmised was motivated by the very real risk of a no-show.

Alex suggests to check http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2002401225,00.html
Not bad idea as for me.  "He was pushing himself around the town clutching a drink in one hand and a fag in the other. He looked a bit rough but he was enjoying himself. He had no shoes on, just a pair of slippers." Intrigued ?

WONDERFUL MADNESS!!!

Shane MacGowan DJed at DeathDiscoDublin#11 for two hours!!!
" ...Shane, there on stage in his wheelchair at DDD#11, he was brilliant. He'd choose the track and BP would spin it, with Shane often announcing the song on mic or singing over the track. Shane MacGowan is a lovely man, a good warm soul, a special cat. We're lucky, very lucky, to have him around..."

Having just returned from
the gig in Dublin and also visiting Shane's local pub & house  in Karny (just outside Puckaun) , it was reported in the press that he broke his ankle running for a plane although privately , everyone believes he fell down some stairs.
To see Shane in a wheelchair was at times funny but also very sad.
He also had to be lead from the stage after shouting "Pish" , implying he needed to go to the toilet.
He also "Threw up" on stage halfway through the set.
I got several good photos for myself to remind me of the whole sorry but enjoyable episode including one of Shane in mid puke.

FLOORED GENIUS
Exclusive: Shane McGowan is unwell

10 Sep 2002
PlayLouder hero, leader of The Pogues, writer of some of the best songs ever, Shane McGowan, is "on his last legs", according to friends.
The singer was admitted to a Dublin hospital on Saturday night after collapsing in his home from taking what's thought to be a cocktail of whiskey and heroin. He played a gig last night from a wheelchair, but was, according to sources, "completely fucking out of it".
Shane's health has spiralled downward drastically since his fianc?, Victoria Mary, left him.Recent sightings of the man have led to cruel "Tellytubby" comparisons. Friends of the singer, however, are not amused.
"It's a real shame," said one. "He seemed kind of on his way back last November, but that's gone out of the window."

Shane has lost the support of waterford last night. He cancelled the show apparantly because they couldnt drag him out of the pub. The popes themselves didnt even turn up. Shower of fuckin wankers the lot of em. Still as some sort of a cancellation we got a full refund and a ticket to see aslan

Shane MacGowan & The Popes saving the best until last!
Shane MacGowan's Irish tour got off to a great start last week with dates in Letterkenny and Galway. Because of his recent fall he had to be helped on stage but once there he gave a great performance belting out all of his classic songs. It helps that he has a band, The Popes, who are absolutely on fire at the moment.
This week the tour continues around the country and takes in 2 sold out dates at the Dublin Ambassador on Friday and Saturday. However, because of the fantastic reception he got on his last visit, Shane has decided to end the tour on Sunday 8th with a show at South. So you can expect a party atmosphere and another fantastic performance by Ireland's greatest living songwriter in front of devoted audience from all over the South East

Saw the boys in
Limerick on Saturday night. Have to say I was disappointed - lacklustre performance. Shane looks as if he doesn't give a shit anymore (and is just picking up handy money). The band's sound has disimproved without a fiddle player, tin whistler and accordian player. Now I've seen the band at least 2 dozen times which mightn't be much compared to some of you, but it was poor on Saturday. Just a word to Ste as well - hopefully you're right about a new album, but I can't really see it - surely if they had any new stuff in the can they would be giving it trial runs in gigs? Same old setlist since 1996 - not that the songs are crap by any means but it's all getting a bit predictable. ps. I reckon Shane is gone so lazy he won't bother standing up at gigs again when he's leg is recovered!!

in Leitrim but it was better for atmosphere anyway. band were in great form, did notice that Mick was'nt there, just Andy, Paul Bob and Tom and Shane of course. And talk about a new man, Tom looks about 20 years younger!!! Brilliant to have him back!

Well, lets start with the excellent news that Tommy is in fine form and will join the band for the upcoming Irish tour.  On the other side of the coin though we have Shane on crutches due to a broken hip and ankle, however he is going to do all the Irish dates, Although the doctor says he should be seated for the shows, now I don't know about you, but I get a picture of Val Doonican in my mind.
Now that Tommy is fit this means that work can start again on Shane's new album as well as the bands new solo album. The new Shane album is expected to be released before Xmas with the bands solo album due in the new year.
There is also a bit of sad news, Mick has now left the band and the guys have decided to remain a four piece from now on. However they will draft in Whistle players, accordionists, fiddlers etc as and when required.

After  almost  a  two  hour  delay  our  Main  Man  showed  up  at  the

Tivoli  in  Utrecht,  Holland for  an  almost full house of some
400  people  or so.   Dressed  in  His nice suit,  a book in his left pocket,
He was slowly making His way to the front of the stage on two crutches!
There was also a stool waiting for him to lean on, which He occasionally needed to sit on or lean on to every now and then. It really did seem he had some trouble with his hip. For those of you who don't know He broke His hip a few years ago. He may be a bit slower on foot but immediately it was clear to all of us - including the band- that he was in this uplifting spirit we all love Him so much for. He became his drink, a fag and stayed constantly busy with all of us in the front rows, insulting some wankers (glad he did) and made praises. The Popes lined up without the accordeon player but found a great replacement for MacAnimal on banjo. The young banjoplayer seemed to be walked out from school directly on stage and seemed to shy to watch the audience for only one moment but did a hell of a job!! But this band at least needs an accordeon player to impress lads. Shane didn't bother. He was on, and nothing and no one could stop Him. Not even when He was hit in His face while he was singing twice within 30 seconds by plastic cups who were thrown by some asshole from the back. They were empty so no humor in that. Not us, nor the band but Hé was making the jokes tonight, for example when he hit the drums with both crutches during the final instrumental tunes of 'Body'. Big Time! If I tell you He did an attempt to sing Springsteens 'Dancing In The Dark' on a quiet moment that says it all, doesn't it?!! Here's the set-list:
   - Fall From Grace
   - Donegal Express

Ministry of Rock Openair Festival. Switzerland .
Shane should play at 6 in the evening, but they said he had problems at the airport or stuff like that. So he should play in a 2 hours later in an extra hall (i guess for horses cos the festival was on a horsetrack). It was quite rainy later that evening, so it was really great to see Shane in this hall. It was really hot in it, i guess there were only around 200 people in it, so we had a lot of space in front. Shane came on on stage, in one hand the dring in the other the cigarette. He had a really enormous beerbelly, but he was in really good form. He played:
   - Fall from grace,
   - donegal,
   - RocknRoll Paddy,
   - Back in the county hell,
   - Auld Triangle, !
   - GREENLAND WHALE FISHERIES,
   - Mother MO Chroi,
   - Instrumental,
   - Dirty Old Town,
   - Granuaille,
   - Body of an American,
   - More Pricks Than Kicks,
   - Streams of Whiskey,
   - Sick Bed,
   - Poor Paddy,
   - Irish Rover
Encore:
   - Rainy Night,
   - Bottle Of Smoke,
   - Down by the salley gardens.
During Salley Gardens Shane started to dance and balancing a glass on his head, but then he fell on stage and the crowd went crazy. It was a really wonderfull 1.5 hours. I was so tiered after the show from dancing and shouting as i've seldom been before. And the banjo player was not with the band, any news? There was a women playing fiddle. Fucking loud show, but brilliant (my first Shane show). Hope to see him next year here in germany, when he's hopefully promoting his third Solo albu
