Interview with Mundy (he tells about collaboration with Shane among many other things): Interview with Mundy 16 April 2009 (Music Interview) Words: Lauren Murphy. Shane is featured on new Sharon Shannon's studio album "Saints And Scoundrels": Following on from the amazing success of 'The Galway Girl' single with Mundy and her two Meteor Awards, Sharon Shannon returns with a great new single featuring Galway band The Cartoon Thieves (aka and formerly No Banjo). The song titled 'Mama Lou' was originally written by Pogues frontman, Shane MacGowan ('Mama Lou' was a little known outtake from the Crock of Gold album by The Popes) and Sharon has enlisted the help of Galway's best kept secret, the mightily talented Cartoon Thieves to turn out a high energy romp; great fun and a perfect way to get a brief respite from all the doom and gloom that surrounds us today. 'Mama Lou' is the lead single taken from Sharon's new studio album, 'Saints and Scoundrels', which is due for release on Friday 25 September. The album is a mixture of original instrumentals composed by Sharon, and also features contributions from Imelda May, Shane MacGowan, the classic Waterboys line-up of 1989 reunited, Jerry Fish. Cartoon Thieves and many more. 'Mama Lou' will be available to buy in all good record shops and to download via iTunes from Friday 4 September. 05.09.2009 MacGowan laughs off swine flu to cheer his Tipperary team in final By Fiona Dillon The Herald Saturday September 05 2009 The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan has dismissed rumours that he had been struck down with swine flu. The star revealed that he had been fighting off bronchitis and pneumonia. "Luckily they caught it early," he said. Shane (51) said: "I've been feeling quite poorly so I'm putting my feet up, but I'm a good bit better now." He revealed that he felt up to seeing his team Tipperary take on Kilkenny in the All-Ireland hurling final. "I'm going down on Sunday for the match and I'm very much looking forward to it," he said. His friends feared that he may have caught swine flu when he first fell ill because of his symptoms, but this did not turn out to be the case. 23.08.2009 THE POGUES AT BEAUTIFUL DAYS Devon, UK, 22 August 2009 Fans inpressions (dutifully posted to LiveJournal): "The sadly late lamented Shane Mcgowan was joined on stage by seven soberly dressed undertakers for the Pogues final "Forget the pension, this is to pay for the Wake" tour. Might have sounded better if he'd had his teeth in." -- quercus And cupla videos to judge yourself: If I Should Fall From Grace with God Kitty Followed by enthusiastic comments from their operator (posted to PRS): I thought that it had all gone slightly wrong when the band made the stage....stood around a bit and no sign of Shane. It appeared that an on the spot decision was made and they burst in to Repeal. He eventually walked on with purpose dressed in a new suit, shirt, tie brown leather shoes, eyepatch, He was clean shaven and had a haircut. The set list then went something like Streams. IIISFGWG. BMS. Turkish. Sayonara. Kitty. Tuesday Morning. Bottle o smoke. Thousands. Lullaby( For Katie the paramedic) Brown Eyes. Dirty Old Town. Irish Rover(For Ronnie) Fiesta to end. Shane wanted to do Poor Paddy but the curfew would not allow. I have probably missed a few and got them in the wrong order but the only one I cant remember them doing from the normal list was White City. James was very striking in his crimson velvet suit- The knees in his trousers lasted 3 songs..but thats ok he has 2 other pairs I liked the new " Brass Section" trumpet and trombone....the trumpet player was akin to a very young Jem. The band were outstanding. Shane was sober, we could hear every word and his timing was spot on. He was very chatty with the massive crowd and clearly enjoyed every moment. I have seen The Pogues many many times but last night was outstanding. A lot of people were very lucky to have witnessed such a show. " -- Bastard Landlord 21.08.2009 THE POGUES AT UNION SCENE Drammen, Norway, 20 August 2009 Norwegians make a great audience – hospitable, supportive and thankful. If you were not at the gig in Drammen you can judge by quantity and quality of all those pre- and post- gig reviews they supplied so industriously in so short time. I am impressed and touched. (Everything is mechanically translated, so beg your pardon, dear readers) A Pre-view: Drammen Recent The Pogues sing beautiful songs about drunk by ?yvind Schou "No one writes such beautiful songs about drunk as Shane MacGowan. But he appeared on Gardemoen in afternoon sweet and happy with a bottle of aquavit in hand. Around 22 he appeared on stage, not sober. The first minute was used to get to space, light and find a mikrofonstativ to hold on tight to. The smoking law was ignored from his side. But out there and we got a whirlwind of a show, all about 1400 who had squeezed themselves into the Union. Shane disappeared from the scene sometimes, but came back and bloomed. Following on from the runaway success of Galway Girl, she has linked up with newcomers the Cartoon Thieves to perform the forthcoming release. The ditty started life as an out-take from the Crock Of Gold album by McGowan's side project The Popes, but Sharon has adapted it to make it her own. Described as a "high-energy romp", the new song is taken from the album Saints And Scoundrels, which is due for release on September 25." For the hundreds of people in the club still buzzing from the gig, I wasn't sure if they'd be so impressed. While Sharon Shannon and her nine-piece band had played a blinder on stage the night long, MacGowan had to be lifted on (and off) stage and sang just five numbers. At ˆ40 a ticket, for those who had only come to see MacGowan, that amounted to ˆ8 a song! But Shane could do no wrong. 'Ah shir, it's MacGowan the rascal - that's just him!' That seemed to be the general attitude of the crowd, and he didn't let them down with some of his trademark antics on stage - downing a bottle of beer in record time. I honestly think that people would have been disappointed at anything else. So things could probably only get better this time around although he did risk dividing his Scouse fans by declaring his passion for Everton. The impressive line up includes Shane MacGowan, Jerry Fish, The Mighty Stef, Spellbound, Steve Fanning from the Last Tycoons and Ms Gordon herself. <...> She describes one of the acts, Shane MacGowan, as being her "mentor". "I have known Shane for five years. He is a great artist." Candice has an album in the pipeline, Before Sunset Ends, on MacGowan's indie label which she hopes to have out by the end of the year. There is also talk of the onetime Pogue going out to Haiti in October with Candice to muck in for some work with Haven. "I can't wait," says Ms Gordon. "But I want this gig to be sold out to raise money first!" Because if somebody told you that they'd spent an evening getting rained on in a field while a band played let's-all-have-a-singalong music while an frequently incoherent singer chain-smoked his way through the lyrics, you'd likely say "sounds like you had a rubbish time". But on a rainy night in, erm, Wollaton, the Pogues delivered. Want a setlist, do you? Go buy a greatest hits album – there's your setlist. This was pure, driving, sing-it-if-you-know-it party fare for the faithful and if all the dancing was any indication, the faithful loved it. Shane McGowan was on fine, indecipherable form. After the first song, he said "That (pause) was the first song." Rapturous cheering. "This (longer pause) is the second song." And so on. MORE >>> Fans testify: "As people moved around stages / beer tent we found ourselves in an even better position for The Pogues. Shane McGowan having to be led onto the stage after the first song had finished meant he probably saw less of it than me. Something tells me it's partly an act, but bearing in mind he's been drinking since he was 10 years old, he's as lucky as me to still be alive." -- Lucky Col "the pogues...now, in my head before seeing these i had an idea of what i might see. obviously shane mcgowan has a reputation for being a drunken irish crazyman who has lost all of his teeth. i really thought he would come out drunk and slightly kooky. the band came out first and started playing an instrumental. obviously building up to mcgowans entrance. what happened next was shocking. he was so drunk, he was guided on stage, he could hardly stand up, the mic was pointed out to him so he could see it, as not only did he have his teeth messed up, but he also had an eyepatch on. everything he said inbetween songs was indecipherable, ive grown up around thick irish accents, and i know that sometimes they are hard to understand, but this was ridiculous. he literally could have been grunting and make as much sense. nonetheless, this was an amazing set. surprisingly he could remember all the lyrics, and although sounding like a grizzly, gruff drunkard...the lyrics were understandable. the highlight of this was him attempting to down a bottle of gin during their last song...it really was unforgetable. he was singing alright which seemed strange. i guess he is so used to singing his own songs he kinda just knows them really well. cos all the bits that werent songs went really badly. dropping the mic all the time, knocking things over. also, i dunno if they do this at every gig, but they got out like a metal tray and started hitting each other over the head with it, that was pretty funny. shane mcgowan was just repeatedly hitting himself in the head over and over really hard, i guess he cant do more damage to himself, he is pretty fucked up already. also i was told he had new teeth put in not long back, but from the look of things, looks as if they are all gone now. Unfortunately we arrived too late to catch The Blockheads, but up next were The Pogues, whom I'd never seen.Nobody knew if Shane MacGowan was going to show or not,but when the band strode, well ambled onstage there he was with a tall drink and cigarette in hand. and an eye-patch! It didn't take much to get the crowd going even if you couldn't understand much of what SM was singing.I swear, during one bit of between-song banter he wished us, "Good luck with your Christmas shopping." Fair enough,Shane. It was impossible to say if he really was hammered or if he was hamming it up a little, but he and his band held the attention for one hour before the Main Event... " MORE >>> Or here with pics REVIEW: The Pogues/Echo Arena, Liverpool by Emma Pinch, Liverpool Daily Post Jul 16 2009 AN EVENING with Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan must generally have you sitting on the edge of your seat. Would he be propped up, throw up, or even turn up, as one woman anxiously enquired at the door of the Arena where he was performing last night. Fortunately only the latter, mostly, was a yes and he was in fine physical form. He’d lost the new set of teeth he’d been previously been seen sporting, but he was trim, with a fine mane of chestnut hair, and a voice as gloriously fierce and gravelly as ever. He was also sporting a piratical black eye patch, which he may or may not have attributed to a lost fight with a beer glass – his brief addresses to the audience were grumpy and quite impenetrable. But here’s the thing with Shane MacGowan – he might be listing at 40 degrees to the horizontal but once he grabs that mike, music transforms him. Before the gig he was wandering around by the side of the stage not looking too clever and then he wanders onstage with an eyepatch on clutching a bottle of white wine, complains about the smoking ban telling the audience they can burn down the venue at the end of the gig and launches into an amazing version of Streams Of Whiskey. One minute it's all ramshackle lateness and how in God's name can he do anything but then put him behind the mic and let the band start up and The Pogues and Shane MacGowan sound as great as ever." And they do care: "But first we had the good sense to stay inside a little longer and watch Pete Doherty play a solo set. We would stay up late, talking and having fun after gigs. I asked him, before I was even recording this album, if he’d duet with me on that song and he kind of mumbled something about not talking about work. But on the last day of mixing the album, I thought ‘To hell with it, I’m just gonna ask him” and he said yeah, come over to the house. I went over there, he handed me a bottle of prosecco and we listened to the album about ten times that night - and he agreed to be in the studio the next day. He collaborates with Cait O’Riordan and Shane MacGowan, the later who lends his vocals to haunting Townes Van Zandt cover “Waitin’ Around to Die.” “He told her to take care of me/she headed down to Tennessee/it’s easier to wait around to die,” croaks Shane in one of the most stirring vocals he has put on record this decade. Since Shane has been on a deathwatch in the Irish community for years, the irony of him doing this song is not lost on the listener. “With regard Shane, that connection was made through my manager, Frank Murray, who managed the Pogues for years. Frank always wanted Shane and I to sing a song together, and since Shane is one of my all time heroes I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him. He was a total gentleman and we had a lot of fun and laughs in the studio!” MORE >>> Shane is back to Ireland, since 23rd. By Henrietta Ronson Sunday Express Sunday May 17,2009 The former Pogues front man happily flashed the pearlies last week instead of his trademark gummy snarl, even though he must have paid a jaw-dropping sum for them. Last year, Shane, 51, famous for his Fairy Tale of New York duet with Kirsty MacColl, said: “I’m going to get my teeth done – emergency dentures to stop my face falling apart. “I might get some dentures in and leave it at that, or I might get them done gradually.” Top dentists in London said implants can cost up to ?2,500 a tooth, taking Shane’s bill for a full set of 32 to ?80,000. And some asorted comments: "Now he actually looks somewhat normal, and not quite so much like Smeagol on a drunken rampage. The question remains; if Shane MacGowan has teeth in his mouth, is nothing sacred anymore? What is the world coming to?" -- Lady Garfunkel I think it’s a shame actually. I liked his old rotten teeth and toothless grimace. I think it suited his image as the drunk and incoherent lead singer of the Irish band The Poques. His dishevelled and debauched appearance became his trademark and that became a statement that portrayed the band’s image and essence. The next thing we’ll be hearing is that Shane MacGowan has given up drink! -- Christianna 16.05.2009 THE NEWS WE WERE WAITING FOR FOR SO LONG.. Guess Chew? (with pics) The Sun 16 May 2009 HELL-RAISING former POGUES star SHANE MacGOWAN has finally swapped his infamous gnashers for a set of pristine new teeth. The singer, who was unmistakable for his gappy smile, jetted to Spain for some serious dental work and now looks almost unrecognisable in my new snap. He says he had the emergency dentures to stop his face “falling apart” after 35 years on the thrash. Oh bye gum! Shane MacGowan FINALLY gets a full set of new teeth By Caroline Graham Daily Mail 16 May 2009 Add to My Stories He is infamous for his shabby looks and gummy smile. But all that's in the past now for Shane MacGowan. The Pogues singer has been spotted in Malaga with a new set of gnashers. MacGowan has reportedly spent the last month in Spain having extensive dental work to repair the acute damage to his mouth caused by decades of hard partying. During one all-day drinking session in Limerick, Ireland, he fell over a wall, smashing his teeth on a pile of bricks. The 51-year-old became renowned for his dishevelled appearance and his terrible teeth, which eventually became his trademark. But it wasn't popular with everyone. One American record company airbrushed some teeth onto him on an album cover so as not to put off U.S. fans. MacGowan had recently talked about getting his teeth fixed to stop his face 'falling apart'. We think the dentally-discerning Yanks would approve of his pegs now... A Smile Only A Dealer Could Love! The Sun says Shane stumbled on over to Spain so that a dentist could fill with mouth with shiny grey Chiclets! Shane said he only had the surgery, because his face was “falling apart.” Aw. Don’t you kind of miss the old Shane? His mouth looked like the inside of a bag of melted Gummi Bears and there was something endearing about that. The track is a dark tune, with a haunting vibe provided by O’Riordan’s vocals in comparison with the rawness of Stefs inclusions. The frontman himself, Shane MacGowan joins Stef for a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s ‘Waitin’ Around To Die’. True to MacGowan’s nature and lifestyle the track is a down and dirty drinking tune, and firmly plants Stef as Ireland’s modern version of MacGowan’s lyrical talent and raw vocals..." I surprised my folk music mad man with tickets to see Sharon Shannon Big Band with Camille O’Sullivan and Shane McGowan. Such a good night! We got jiggy to some seriously outstanding Irish Tunes. I’m not sure you know who Shane McGowan is. Ever heard of The Pogues – responsible for such hits as Fairytale of New York, Dirty Ol’ Town and Irish Rover? He is the founding Lead Singer. Before he saunters onto the stage however, it's down to the main act - award-winning Irish chanteuse Sharon - to keep the audience on their toes. And that she does. Flashing an infectious smile, she guides her band through an eclectic mix of traditional accordion and fiddle music with occasional forays further afield - like the sparkle of reggae that eases its way into the epic crescendos of the stunning Flyodesq. With McGowan by now firmly attached to the microphone, Irish Rover goes down an absolute storm. Rainy Night in Soho is pretty special too - his voice may drift to the wrong side of gravelly sometimes but there's no denying he's a compelling performer who can hold a crowd in the palm of his hand. And though he delivers a rousing climax in the shape of Dirty Old Town, the evening's highlight is - what else? - Fairytale Of New York. Hot hooley from Sharon and all-star band – and Shane Published: 21 April, 2009 The Inverness Courier "IF there is a problem with Irish accordion ace Sharon Shannon's all star Big Band, it might just be that it is too good. Not much of a reason to complain, but given the standard of her seven strong backing band and the other guests who popped up during the two hour plus set and Shannon's own generosity to her fellow performers, at times Shannon seemed more like a master of ceremonies than the top billed star of the show." HotPress 25 Mar 2009 Shane MacGowan features on three of the tracks, which grace the new Popes album, Outlaw Heaven. The Celtic barnstormers in question are the title-track, ‘Loneliness Of A Long Distance Drinker’ and ‘Bastard’ – nobody said anything about it being subtle! Also on the guest-list is Shane’s fellow Pogue Spider Stacey. The album was inspired by the time lead singer Paul ‘Mad Dog’ McGuinness spent recently on remand for perverting the course of justice. ‘I hated being stuck in a cockroach, mice infested 8x6 cell for 23 hours a day, but once I got over the bad food and cramped conditions I began to realise it was the best thing to happen to me in a long time,” McGuinness reflects. “I imagined I was in a luxury hotel getting the rest, detox and seclusion I needed to sort my life out. I also met some of the kindest, straightest, upfront people ever, and that was only the murderers! Prison is however the mother of creativity and before you could say ‘Outlaw Heaven’ I was off writing and singing songs to my cellmate. I didn’t have a guitar so I wrote the lyrics down on the three pieces of paper I was allowed every fortnight, the music I composed in my head. If I was able to get to church on Sunday I was able to borrow the priest’s guitar. Thank god for the folkmass – I never thought I’d say that!” The collection is out here on May 8th.
