Love and Rockets by Los Bros Hernandez - site-age lacking in the "rocket" department, still i could not have picked a better name for this series. a fantastic title and makes you realize that life is summed up in two words "Vida Loca". two bros are the main artist. Jaime draws the punk strewn Hoppers 13 storyline, a mexican enclave of LA, focusing on the life and times of Maggie. her fluctuating life, relationships, stability, weight. and her ability to pull it together without much and the Locas that her life is filled with. the other bro, Gilbert draws mainly the Palomar story line of a latin american village and its endlessly fascinating people and times. also did a great story of LA during the riots and featuring characters you wouldnt think all fit into that. i cant come up with anything that can accurately describe the genius of this book. i can say that maybe you shouldnt start on the first collected book. maybe start with vol 2 or 3. the way things were written evolved rather than progressed along a logical path. but, my goodness, read!!!!!!! |
hmm, i'm not really that well read... or necessarily intelligent. whaddya know? so instead of grand pretense, i'll throw some suggestions at you. not that these works should suffer because of my bumbling ineptitude or bad attitude or because you never thought i was all that clever or because i'm not original in matters regarding my t-shirt wearing and social situations that required something of me that i couldnt quite put forward in the manner that you were expecting or looking for but these are works, nonetheless, that made me stop in my stupid tracks, and caused a moment like that in 2001 Space Oddysey whereupon the monkey (no matter the form) came upon the Black Spire and began to make fire or become interstellar beings, and also even if you did not appreciate that comment, SQUIRRELS CAN SUCCUMB TO HEROIN ADDICTION!!! jeez.... dammit... why'd you have to.... |
hmm... no time fr real intros (click fr retail therapy) the great nihilist Scottish highland teenage girl trilogy Morvern Callar - These Demented Lands - The Sopranos (i recommend the first and the last one, the middle one is a semi sequel to the first, and is more of a what happens when the nihilist egg cracks open and reality gives birth to the alternative) Yah, these books helped to put a Scottish lilt to the way i think of speaking. that may sound very pretensious, but i'm no caring. you ken? Morvern Callar may put you off initially with her level of nihilisticity (my word) especially with her reaction to her dead boyfriend at the beginning of the book, and the utter seeming trampishness of the Soprano girls may make one consider the motives of a man writing these books, but dont let that throw you, these book are so marvellously written and affecting, you will always feel them. no matter how detached their individual qualities may seem as if they would put you off.... i dunno, READ! |
