THE ROYAL HOTEL

On nearing the one approach to the town, we were strangely captivated by the site, whose green slopes and delicate contours made a charming setting for scenic effect. The time was winter, but the day glowing with Spring.

Later, a very useful and interesting fact was conveyed to us: That Port Macquarie owned the mildest winter in the colony, and its people looked upon the asset as one of its chiefest possessions. Our first impression induced us quite readily to accept the information, which subsequent experience and a more intimate knowledge fully confirmed.

Following the road into the main street which constitutes the shopping block, we came to the memorial in its avenue of tall pines, the roadway finally terminating in a delightful green reserve, on the actual shore of the Bay, and, facing us, a magnificent Hotel.

The Royal Hotel

Our speculations regarding future home comforts were discarded, for the first view of this House gave ample promise that our lots were fated to be cast in pleasant places.

A profusion of display made up of elks and staghorns and other decorative shrubs native to the district gave a decided artistic touch to the massive face of the structure, and somehow tended to indicate the style, system and attention to management within.

The House contains 40 rooms. Its equipment comprises a modern sewerage system, and as there is yet no municipal water supply, the hot and cold water service of the Royal may serve to inform its guests to what lengths of achievement the proprietor will go to ensure their wellbeing under his car.

The breakwater wall commences within a few feet of the side entrance, and winds out over half a mile to the open sea forming an entrance channel for the port's shipping.

So the fisherman may indulge his avocation to his heart's content, amidst delightful surroundings, and not go beyond reach nor sight of his starting place.

The proprietor, Mr. J. McGann, also happens to be the owner, whose interest in the development of Port Macquarie as a super health and tourist resort, as evidenced by his activities on behalf of his own establishment, have gained for him a popularity as unbounded as it is deserving.
