MANGA

Devilman: the Original

The original manga. Originally written in 1972, was definitely ahead of its time. I think the best stories have a good beginning and a good ending. Unlike American comics that go on forever, many of the Japanese manga have an ending. Characters get older and sometimes die. (And they don't try to find a way to bring them back.) I don't want to say to much about this because I don't want to spoil it for those of you that haven't "read" it yet. Even if you can't read Japanese you can still get the gist of the story. Pictured is the 1997 reprint that I believe is still in print. This has been re-printed in many different languages as well has being re-printed in Japan

Neo Devi

Neo-Devilman 1-3

These are different stories involving Devilman's world. Some are about Devilman and add to the mythology some are separate stories that don't involve Devilman but take place the same time as the events in the original Devilman manga. They are illustrated by various artists. There are some color pages in the start middle and toward the end. There are some truly amazing art and stories in these volumes.

Number one is written and illustrated by Lazy Hagawari, Tatsuya Egawa, Katsuya Terada, Ken Ishikawa, Go Nagai and Shinichi Hiromoto.

Number two is written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki, Noriko Nagano, Go Nagai, Akihiko Takadera and Kazuko Yumeno.

Number three is written and illustrated by Noburu Miyama, Miki Toro, Shinobu Kaze, Sho-u Tajima, Masaomi Kanzaki, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Iou Kuroda.

I will try to add some comments on each volume later. If anyone would like to offer reviews, translations or explanations, PLEASE DO!  I want this to be an interactive page!

Devilman Illustrations

This is a pure art book. There is very little text in this book. The art in here is awesome! I will post some of these on the images page. If you are a true Devilman fan and can't read Japanese, this is the book for you! Pick it up if you get the oppuritunity.

Amon: The Darkside of The Devilman

OK! This is my favorite as far as pure art / illustration. I finally got a copy of this! It is amazing! To see images and a translation, checkout  Miki's Home Page.  I thought it would be similar to the Apocalypse of Devilman OVA. Boy was I wrong! It is quite different. The only similarity is Amon taking over Akira.

The second Volume is the origins of Amon and Silene. (Or is that Sirene?) Written by Go Nagai and illustrated by Yu Kinutani. The art is the SH*T!  This shows the birth of Amon (Hint, he wasn't always a big bad ass demon! Think about the way the Demons join together in the first OVA.) and how he joins up with Silene. This story takes place in prehistoric times. (Lots of dinosaurs.) Satan is also involved in the plot. (I think he kind of organizes the demons but I'm not sure. Definitely get a hold of this one!

OVA's

The first two OVA's are very much based on the Go Nagai manga. The art looks very Go Nagai. The stories follow pretty closely to the original manga aside from a couple of minor details.

As a side note here, try to avoid the dubbed version of these. They are embarrassing.  Manga told me they have no plans to release the subtitled versions. You can see the Dubbed versions by clicking here. You can still find the L.A. Hero versions out there. You can find these versions on Ebay etc.. but keep in mind that they are most likely copies and not a "real" version. Most dealers will come clean with you if you just ask them.

Devilman Vol. 1: Genesis tells how Akira meets Ryo again and eventually becomes Devilman. It is 55 minutes and is a must see for anime fans.

Devilman Vol. 2: Silene the Demon Bird is much more action oriented and is probably the better of the two. I also believe the animation is better. This shows Devilman's battle with Geruma the water Demon, Jinmen the extremely frightening and horrific Turtle Demon and Silene. Also in Vol.2 you will see the fate of Akira's mother (In the manga I believe it was Miki's cousin.) and the bond between Akira and Ryo.

Amon: The Apocalypse of Devilman

There is some descent among Go Nagai fans on this OVA. Some feel that it is sacrilege to let anyone else do designs for these characters. (I believe the designs were based on Yasushi Nirasawa art.)  I LOVE this OVA! This story takes place between the final fate of Miki and Devilman's final battle with Satan. This is basically about what happens when Akira withdraws into himself and the demon Amon gets to run around loose. (Not good!) This is a very violent and somewhat taboo. (Amon is a demon in everyway here.) The DVD pictured is from Hong Kong and the subtitling is a bit iffy. It is well worth having and can be found easily on Ebay, Yahoo and Amazon auctions. Manga tells me they have plans for a  domestic release sometime this year. ( Hopefully sub-titled and not dubbed.)
