| THE NIGHT EVELYN CAME OUT OF THE GRAVE played constantly at the DI. Never fear if there was
a triple feature this movie would be the second feature. I must have seen it a half dozen times
in 1975 and 1976. It played with everything. Lord Alan Cunningham is a kinky sort of fellow.He has recently recovered from a mental illness. He likes to pick up redheaded prostitutes and take them out to his decaying castle for a weekend of sexual perversion.(So we are treated to quite a few naked women). Whips and chains and leather thrills that may or may not end up in murder. Ya see Alan's late wife was a redhead that fooled around on him. She died in childbirth.Or so he says. Alan picks up whores and we are led to the conclusion that he kills them after he whips and beats them. This is the hero? One of his pickups is a stripper named Susie. She does a strip tease act out of a coffin. Offering her a thousand pounds to spend the weekend with him Susie jumps at the chance. But she ends up being beaten and chased through the forest presumably to her death. On the edge of madness Alan meets Gladys at a party thrown by his cousin Smedley or whatever the heck his name is.Alan and Gladys hit it off right away and get naked (yeehah!). Impulsively Alan marries Gladys and brings her back to the castle. He restores his castle and all seems to be well. But a certain redheaded corpse keeps popping up to frighten his wife. Then someone begins to kill off members of Alan's family. His ex brother in law is bitten by a snake and buried alive. His auntie in the wheelchair gets her head bashed in with a rock and is fed to Alan's pet foxes.Alan begins to slip into madness as things go fron bad to worse. The topper is the stormy night when he discovers that Evelyn's tomb is empty.Evelyn's rotting corpse pursues him through the woods and Alan has a breakdown. He is carted off to his doctor's fool farm. SPOILERS: Is Evelyn really back from the dead? Did Alan really kill all of those prostitutes? Well not to spoil anything but the answer is no to both. It was all a plot of evil cousin Smedley's to drive Alan mad so he could gain control of his fortune and estate. There are double and triple crosses galore at the end.Keep your scorecard handy.END OF SPOILERS It is a bit of a cheat to ask the audience to sympathize with a man who seemingly murders women. So at the end we get the foolish explanation from the doctor that Alan would pass out before actually killing the women.But if that is so why didn't one of them go to the police and report him as a lunatic? One woman's reason is obvious but the logic isn't there for the others. Then again in most of these Italian chillers logic gets tossed out the window from the start. All in all it has everything but the kitchen sink.Boobs, murders and mysterious events with a few assorted chills and kinky thrills stirred to a boil. |
