| Santo in The Diabolical Axe |

| This Santo film is a bit different from most of the Santo flicks I've seen.
First off it starts out in 1603 with...the death of Santo. Then we flash forward 361 years later to find Santo in the ring with an opponent. Out of thin air comes a muscleman in black (tights, shirt, mask,Underoos) with a great honking axe out to give Santo a haircut from the neck up. The masked man vanishes in front of the crowd and later attacks Santo at his place where the scream of a ghost save's the hero's life. With the help of Dr Zanoni and his time machine with a magical beanie ( I want a magical beanie) Santo travels back to 1603. There he learns the story of his ancestor who was a Zorro type swordfighter. His ancestor's great love was stolen by a man who sold his soul to a minor demon in exchange for eternal life and strength. Santo also learns that his own outfit carries some magic. Back in 1964 the black masked demon kills Santo's girlfriend. So Santo traces the madman down for a final battle pitting his strength against a big arsed hatchet.And Santo may just lose this time out! This film is rather downbeat and grim as compared to other almost light hearted Santo films I've seen. There is a dark and nasty edge to it with a seemingly unstoppable villian that can pop in and out of time (good thing he never caught Santo in the bathroom) and with the brutal murder of Santo's girl. You can pick this dvd up rather cheaply and it may be a good idea before it goes out of print. |
