Sirius was one of seven pups born to Stacey and Ethan on May 19, 2002. The litter included four males and three females.  Each of the puppies is being raised by a 4H Seeing Eye Puppy Project volunteer, in the hopes someday they will each become a faithful companion and steadfast guide to a blind person.

with Detective Foskey Seeing Eye pups are named according to the litter they are born to (Sirius is from an "S" litter).  Once the dogs are old enough to be weaned from the litter, they are placed with volunteer puppy-raisers across the State of New Jersey, and parts of Pennsylvania.

Puppy Sirius, a male German Shepherd, who was born at The Seeing Eye Breeding Station in Chester, New Jersey is being raised by Jersey City Police Detective Brian Foskey.  This will be the fifth Seeing Eye puppy that Brian has raised.

Puppy Sirius resting on the grass Puppy-raisers are responsible for providing their pups with lots of love and attention. Their job is to domesticate the pup, socialize it, and to expose it to many types of environments.  Sirius will learn the basic commands he needs to know (sit, down, rest, and come) before going on to formal training when he is about 18 months old.  Brian and Puppy Sirius will attend classes and go on field trips to expose Sirius to different environments.

Sirius is 11 weeks old and made his second trip to the vet today.  Above photos are Dr. Roy of the Rahway Animal Hospital and his assistant examining Sirius.  Sirius is very healthy and growing nicely.  He weighs 21 pounds and is almost twice the weight he was just a month ago.  He must make one more visit to the vet, in two weeks, before he can begin attending classes with the other Seeing Eye pups.

Sirius has a very good appetite!  He eats a measured amount of food on a scheduled basis.  Young pups are feed 3 times a day to help them digest their food properly.  When he gets a little older, he will be fed slightly larger amounts of food twice a day.

    ALL BY HIMSELF!
Learning to overcome their fear of stairs is a big step for young pups.  Sirius began going up and down the stairs by himself earlier this week.  He is progressing very nicely with his domestic skills.  Although he is still closely supervised, to make sure he does not cause any damage or chew on something that could hurt him, he is given more run of the house than what he had two weeks ago.  He is totally housebroken and signals by pawing at the door when he needs to go out.

Notice in the above photo, that both Sirius' ears are standing straight up.  His left ear is still a little weak, but Shepherds lose their "floppy" ears as they grow and develop.

Puppy Sirius is 13 weeks old now.  Today he had his last puppy shots at the Rahway Animal Hospital.  He is now sporting 2 tags on his collar.  The first, his Seeing Eye Tag, identifies him as a Seeing Eye puppy.  The second tag validates that he has received his rabies shot.  On September 5th, Sirius' License arrived in the mail and he is now wearing it along with his other two tags.
