Best Program Application "Guidelines"

In order to apply to the BEST program you must meet the following criteria to qualify:

  1. You must attend an Information Session. Please go to the Main Page for details on the next session.
  2. You can devote at least 35 hours per week or 140 hours per month to your business for the duration of the program (48 weeks).
  3. The business is new to you.
  4. You have between $4,000 - 5,000 in cash or cash and assets to invest immediately into the business. Proof of these amounts is required i.e. bank statement, line of credit, invoices etc. when you apply.
  5. Obtain a Return-to-Work Action Plan or referral from an HRSD-sponsored case manager.

52 Week Course Outline

Week 1

To provide you with an overview of the steps you need to take to turn your idea into a viable business opportunity, the first week is spent at the Downtown Campus of BCIT.

Day 1

How to check if your idea is worth pursuing, the Opportunity Analysis:

  • Polish your idea
  • Is there a market for your product/service?
Day 2

Opportunity Analysis cont’d:

  • How much Money is needed?
  • Am I the right person?
  • Introduction to Business Planning:
  • What’s in it?
  • Why do I need one?
Day 3

Business Planning:

  • Creating a Business Plan gives you an understanding of all aspects of managing your business – General Management, Marketing Management, Financial Management, Operations Management
Day 4

How to use technology and the Internet as a Marketing Tool for your business

What rules and regulations do you need to watch out for?

Day 5

Business Launch:

  • Marketing steps you need to take
  • How to Sell your product/service
  • Introduction to Enterpriser

Weeks 2-11

You will have Access to Enterpriser from your home computer. Enterpriser is our on-line Business Planning and Start-up tool, designed to help you through the process of developing your Business Plan to prepare for your business launch. It allows you to continue development of your plan from the classroom instruction you received in week 1 and is supplemented by providing access to an advisor for up to 6 hours during these 10 weeks either by telephone, e-mail or in-person.

Week 12

During this week you will return to the Downtown Campus to present your Business Plan to a panel of people from the business community for their feedback and advice. Times will be arranged to suit your schedule. Special panel presentation arrangements can be made for out of town students.

Weeks 13-52

During this 9 month period, you will have access to an advisor to help guide you through the critical start-up phase of your new business. This is a ‘do or die’ period for most new business owners. Being able to contact an advisor by phone, e-mail or meet in person, can help you keep your business on track.
