Summer 2002

Webbie heaven!

The last four episodes of JAG that aired in May and June were wonderful for all Webbies! Four straight weeks of Clayton Webb! It was a first for the series and for the Webbies who were thrilled about it! First we saw him testifying in "Tribunal" and investigating a terrorist threat. Clayton looked wonderful out of his usual three piece suits! Then came "Defending his Honor", "In Country" and the season finale "Enemy Below". We also got to see Webb travel between Afghanistan and Russia. These episodes provided Webbies with lots of great Webbie moments. From a new look, to some action, to almost seeing him open up, to looking incredibly hot as he usually does. This past season of JAG was the best ever for Webbies. We got six episodes with great Webb moments, and we can only hope we get to see as much of Webb next season. This season of JAG wasn't just great for the old time Webbies, it also inspired some new Webbies to come aboard. A HUGE, BIG thank you to Donald Bellisario and everyone at JAG productions for making Webbies so happy this past season! We appreciate all the appearances of our favorite JAG character and can't thank you enough for giving us so much of our wonderful, mysterious, sexy spy. A "job well done" to Mr. Dana Coen for writing our wonderful Webb so well in the episode "In Country". We love everything Mr. Coen wrote for our 'sexy beast'. To Mr. Charles Holland and of course Mr. Bellisario for all the Webb moments in "Tribunal" and "Enemy Below". All of them made Webbies very happy and gave us hours of entertainment even after the episodes aired. And last, but most important of all, a big thank you to Mr. Steven Culp, for portraying Webb the way only he can do it. His performance was flawless. Mr. Culp brings so much to the character of Webb, that it is impossible to imagine anyone else portraying our sexy, sarcastic, dedicated spy. Mr. Culp gives Webb that something special that has made him a favorite of so many JAG fans. Every time Webb shows up, more fans discover the talented and gifted actor that Mr. Culp is. Thank you doing such a great job and for providing your fans with so much to enjoy time after time. A note from Steven to the fans We recently heard from Mr. Culp. Steven read several of the comments made by fans in regards to the Afghanistan episodes. He said he always enjoys reading what the fans have to say. He also wanted to thank the fans for the Father's Day card we sent him in name of the fans and the 9-11 Beanie Babies he received. He said: "You are all so nice to us." Steven says he has been busy being a dad this summer. "With twins it is a full time job." He also wanted to share the latest show he has been working on which premiers next September. (more on that later in the journal) In regards to Webb, he informed us that "there are no JAG episodes in the inmediate future, but I'm sure Webb will be returning at some point." Mr. Culp also confirmed the title change of "Palace Thief". The movie is now titled "The Emperor's Club". He tells us: "As of this writing the movie has been pushed back to Thanksgiving weekend. It's also going to be at the Toronto Film Festival in September. These are signs that the studio is giving it the "prestige" push." Steven sends his best to all the fans. Thank you to Mr. Culp for his updates for the fans. We all appreciate your time and dedication to your fans. Steven's current project We are excited to share the news with you of the latest on Steven! He has informed us that he will appear in episodes of the new ABC television series "Push, Nevada." "I'll be doing at least three episodes. I'm in the middle of the second one right now." This series is produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, and is a mystery and audience participation type show. At this time it is scheduled to air on Thursday nights. From TV critic John Levesque: "Push, Nevada" from Ben Affleck's production company, it's an hour long drama with a game show built in. As an IRS agent tracks down some missing casino money, each episode provides clues to where viewers can actually find it. First person to piece all the clues together wins the cash. The danger lies in obsessing over every word, every gesture, every road sign, and missing the story. But "Push, Nevada" is quirky in that "Northern Exposure" kind of way and Derek Cecil clicks as the persistent Jim Prufrock, who makes Columbo look like a slacker." We will post more on the dates of Steven appearances as the information becomes available. The winner of the "Guess the show" contest is Mary. She was the first Webbie to guess the right show. Congratulations! We will mail your prize. Thanks to everyone who participated.
Reminder: "Star Trek: Nemesis", in which Steve makes a cameo appearance will open on Decemner 13th.

JAG Reviews.

Thank you to our fellow Webbies who contributed reviews to the newsletter. They each receive a copy of the episode they reviewed. "Tribunal" By KSM Tribunal is the first episode of a 4 episode story arch dealing with the capture of a high ranking Al Qaeda terrorist and the race against time to stop another terrorist attack that is being planned. When the episodes starts, we learn that a top Al Qaeda terrorist has been captured in Afghanistan. His name is Mohandes, but he is going by the name of Mustafa Atef. A military tribunal is going to be held aboard the USS Seahawk to try him. The Admiral and Sturgis will be defending Atef, and Mac and Harm will be prosecuting. Mac, Harm, the Admiral and Sturgis arrive aboard the Seahawk and meet up with Bud, who has been serving aboard the USS Seahawk as the ship's JAG officer. Webb is also already aboard. There is a great scene between Webb and the Admiral when the Admiral goes to interview Mustafa Atef for the first time in the brig. When they arrive at the brig, the Admiral is surprised to find Webb there, and says "Webb, I didn't know your were aboard." Webb replies in his typical, sarcastic fashion "I'm not" and then leaves the room. While the Admiral is interviewing Atef, Atef makes a comment about those who were killed in the September 11 attacks in the US got exactly what they deserved. This enrages the Admiral, who proceeds to grab Atef by the throat through the bars. Sturgis tries to pull the Admiral off of Atef, and the Admiral finally releases his hold. The Admiral loosing control like this seems to be something we would not expect to see from the Admiral, but I found it very understandable as I'm sure many other viewers did. At the trial, the prosecution is trying to prove Mustafa Atef is Mohandes, the number 3 man in Al Qaeda. Webb testifies that as the Assistant Deputy Director of Operations, Southwest Asia, he was in charge of developing intelligence on Mohandes (Mustafa Atef). After Atef was captured by Special Forces, Webb supervised his interrogation. During the interrogation, Webb learned Atef was involved with the supervision and training of those involved in the attacks that took place in the United States on September 11. The defense tries to get this confession by Mustafa Atef thrown out, saying it was involuntary given while he was under the influence of a truth serum and against the 5th Amendment. The Judges at the Tribunal end up deciding to exclude the confession.

So what is Webb's title? Oh yes, it was one of those times again when Webbies noticed something was wrong with our dear Webb. This time what got our attention was the change in the job position/title of our favorite spy, Clayton Webb. Until "Tribunal" aired, Webb was known as the Deputy Director Of Operations Counter-Intelligence unit. However, when he took the stand in the episode "Tribunal" we noticed something different. Webb said that he was: "Assistant Director of Operations SouthWest Asia. WHAT? he got demoted? No way! Needless to say the Webbies jumped up and asked one of the insiders of the show about the change. His first response was: "What was the change? I wasn't aware of it. My guess is it was probably a writing error." We then told him about the change we noticed. This is what he said "Maybe CIA job titles are like TV hyphenate job titles. (For those who don't know, hyphenates are writers who also have a producers title) No matter how lengthly, they boil down to; CIA - operative, TV - writer." Ok, so the real CIA doesn't work like that, but it doesn't matter, we are glad he took the time to answer our question. And Webbies can relax now. The change in title was only a writer's mistake and not a demotion of any type. We now wait for Webb to show up on JAG again. Maybe he will be the "Director of the CIA" next time? Then again, as long as we get more of Webb we are happy Webbies! "Defending His Honor" By Carol Preflatish Conscientious Clayton Webb continues his fight against terrorism in the JAG episode "Defending His Honor" that aired on May 7, 2002. The main storyline of this episode has Harm defending Judge Sebring in an involuntary manslaughter hearing after an auto accident that the judge allegedly caused. However, Webbies were more interested in following the exploits of Clayton Webb, so that is what I will concentrate on here. In this episode, we first find Webb still in Afghanistan continuing his search for Kabir, the Al Qaeda terrorist. The writers have a way of having Webb suddenly pop up in a scene from the shadows. They have done it several times in the past and did it in this episode, too. We see an uncooperative terrorist being interrogated by the Afghanis. Suddenly, Webb walks into the scene. He has been in the shadows supervising the interrogation. He tells them to "finish him" and walks away. As he nears the door, the terrorist agrees to tell them what they want to know about Kabir. With the new information, we next find Webb has traveled to Russia and meets up with the Russian military officer. Captain Alexander Valkonov, who Harm has put Webb in touch with. Webb tells Alex that they suspect Kabir is buying weapons for a major attack on the U.S. Military. Valkonov and Webb interview a couple of Russian sailors who said they saw a man fitting Kabir’s description talking with a Russian submarine captain. They go looking for the captain, but find his quarters empty and the captain gone. In the meantime, Kabir has returned to Afghanistan via the Iranian border. Webb also returns to Afghanistan and is in a communications van reviewing some intelligence information. A technician is showing Webb some photos taken by the unmanned Predator spy plane. The photos are of Kabir entering Afghanistan at the border. Webb immediately tells someone to get Special Ops on the phone, “Our people need to go hunting.” This is where the episode ends with ‘to be continued' across the bottom of the screen.

"In Country" By CherylR The first thing we notice when Webb shows up in this episode is that he is still not wearing the usual three piece suit. To the Webbies content, Clayton is wearing casual clothes, that make him look even more atrative than usual. Webbies first see, actually hear, Webb as he stops Gunny’s attempts to obtain information from a local warlord. "Nothing he can’t get from me" pretty much says it all. He who has the most impressive inventory wins, and it isn’t Gunny. In the conversation that takes place between the three of them, Webb makes it clear that he, Clayton Webb is in charge. The Gunny’s need for revenge doesn’t concern Webb; his focus is "saving American lives. We do it fast, we do it thoroughly, we do it my way." There is no room for discussion or argument. Another interesting piece of information is Webb’s code name. "Sexy Beast" certainly is short, accurate, easy to remember and most unforgettable. Not sure if that’s a good thing for someone in covert operations, but hey, who am I to argue? When the terrorist’s location is finally pinpointed, Webb is estatic. Gunny is not. He tries to tell Webb about the Afghan woman Gunny knows is with Kabir against her will. Webb blows him off which angers Gunny. He slugs Webb. Webb slugs Gunny and an nderstanding is reached. Webb decides to listen to Gunny. Night has fallen the next time we see them, out in the middle of nowhere. Webb is ending a conversation on his cell phone. By his actions, the way he doesn’t speak to Gunny right away, just looks at him and then looks away says Webb doesn’t have good news for Gunny. The bombing run on the village can’t/won’t be halted. That’s when Webb reveals an important part of his past. He understands where Gunny is coming from, because Clayton has been there. In Guatemala, at the height of the civil war. Her name isn’t revealed to us, just that she was a folk singer who used to serenade Webb with the saddest songs. What happened to her isn’t disclosed, but the implication is clear. The only word Webb says in response to Gunny’s question is "classified." One word, combined with the look on Clayton’s face says much. After daylight arrives and the bombing run is complete, Webb and the Gunny enter the village. The raid appears to have been successful, if the smoking piles of rubble are any indication. The body of Teresa is discovered in the rubble. Webb, watching, recites a few lines in Spanish from a song, then turns away, as though he can’t bear to watch anymore. Mac asks Webb what he said. He translates the lyrics of a song: "Our love is the child of a cruel father". Not only are the words sad, but the way he says them is heart breaking. At the end of the episode, we learn that Kabir, who had sliced off his own finger and left behind to try to throw pursuers off his trail, is still alive. He is still alive and based on evidence at the village, is in possession of radioactive materials. The hunt for the terrorist is still on…where he is and what his plans are still unknown. Fans are left to wait until the following week.
The review for "Enemy Below" will posted in our reviews page at a later date
What the fans said... "In Country" "Hopefully we will have pictures of Webb with his hair astray. WOW!! Webb has one heck of a right hook. Almost knocked Gunny off his feet. Nice hit." "OH MY GOD! What a show. A full forehead of hair and he looked so sexy. I can just imagine my hands going through that. Grrrrrrrrrrr... My heart be still." "Then his code was SEXY BEAST! WOO! HOOO! is that accurate." "This was one hell of an episode. Just almost makes up for going six months without Webb." "As for Webb, well, all I can say is that I am liking Webb more and more. For a hard-hearted "company man," Webb really does have a soft side. Wish we could see more of him in future eps..." "Defending His Honor" "I agree that it was nice to see Webb being his CIA best this time. I hope that he is seen a lot more next season. He really helps add some depth to the stories." "Steven looked really good. I loved his wardrobe too!!" "I think the B storyline shows that SC could star in his own series. It was great seeing him working minus the JAG twins." "Don't you think Webb looked great! I think it was a new hair cut or something! Maybe it was the lack of the 3-piece suit. Whatever it was it was YUMMY!" "What can I say about Webb? Love every scene he's in. Always thought he looked good in suits, he does 'Afghan Casual' and 'Longshoreman Chic' equally well." "Tribunal" "I agree about Tribunal--I love Gunny and Webb! YUMMY." "Webb's Webb. That's why I love his character! (And SC isn't yesterday's mashed potatoes either.)" "And lastly, it was so good to see Webb--I love that character. He always adds the intrigue element. Can't wait to see the next episodes." "Enemy Below" "Webb looked good! Loved seeing him without a 3 piece suit." "Oh that smile! I loved the way he smiled at that guy in the office!" "The grin on his face when the guy was calling him fool or stupid. That grin can melt any woman!" "I liked the look with the scarf. I think he looked hot."
