Section A: for those exempt from the Practical Driving Exam
Back to driving top
Look at Section B
(pity them)
You lucky devils! You only have to make two trips to the Licensing Center. Apparently Japan has decided to throw your foreign services a diplomatic bone by letting your citizens exchange their licenses fairly easily. While two trips, one to turn in your documents, the second to pick up your license, may seem like one too many steps and a waste of vacation time, those who are reading Section B are in for what may prove to be a long, expensive, and frustrating experience. I don't want to hear any bellyaching from you Section A people.
Your second visit to Ino
What to bring:

1 passport photo taken within 6 months, 3cm x 2.4cm

Eye test/physical fee: \2,400

Licensing fee: \1,750

Your IDP, as it will be confiscated
What to expect:

Arrive at Ino: 12:30

Eye test/ physical:  13:00

Lecture: 15:00

Recieve license: 16:00
The physical is only concerned with if you can move your hands and feet in such a way and with sufficient speed to operate a motor vehiclel safely. No one will see your underwear.

The lecture is an hour of listening to why it is important to be a safe driver and your responsibilities behind the wheel. You will learn about the wonders of the Japanese drivers license numbering system, and why you should always lock your car. Pay attention, or at least look it, because my lecturer would ask questions to the people who fell asleep.
Congratulations! You are now legal to drive in Japan. What chould be simpler?

The 2003 Kochi Driving Survey
See the results of the 2003 Kochi Driving Survey. This survey was designed to get a general feel for car-life in Kochi; what we own, how much we spend, and just how long it might take to get that license.
