The original Silver Fox was spotted in late 2001 when club co-founder Dan Hoedeman was playing for the University of Sussex at County League side Old Varndeanians. A newspaper report of the match commented on this shocking sighting, “not even the help of the silver-haired linesman (the aforementioned Silver Fox), raising his flag like a puppet on a string every time the ball was played forward, could stem the flow of Sussex attacks.”

Since then, silver foxes have been sighted with alarming regularity, even here in the United States. It is hard to say that this was all coincidence. As a matter of fact, at the same time that foxes were popping up with more frequency than your average boy band, a group of students at the College of the Holy Cross were looking for a name for the indoor soccer team that they had just formed. In tribute to the indefatigable original Fox and his brethren, the name F.C. Silver Foxes was bestowed upon the club.
