What is Toastmasters? Toastmasters International is leading the way towards the leading movement devoted to making effective oral communication a worldwide reality. Through its member clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening, and thinking - vitals skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership potential, foster human understanding and contribute to better mankind. The club provides a mutually supportive and positive learning environment which in turn fosters self-confidence and personal growth. We all make mistakes, but the key is learning from it, without having to walk away in shame. Who are the members? There are two TM clubs in FDIP, led by two energetic and enthusiastic individuals, who also happen to have vast reserves of patience and understanding! They are Gladdy Patawaran and Willy Alfaras. The other members come from a variety of backgrounds - discipline, age, religion, perhaps even political affiliation! But in the club, we work as one big FAMILY. What do we do? A typical toastmasters club is made up of 20-30 people who meet once a week or every other week for an hour or two. And contrary to common belief -- we don't just meet for the free lunch. We actually do things here! Almost everyone has a role to play - from the timer, grammarian, AH-counter to the host. Table topics is a portion where you'll be asked to give an impromptu speech given a topic or question. The prepared speeches are designed to help each member move from being a complete nervous wreck in Speech #1 to being a bonafide statesman in Speech #10. And of course, each speech project is evaluated to help the members recognize their strengths and what areas need improvement. Soon, you'll realize that the nerves are starting to go away, as you gain more confidence speaking in front of the room. And since all the speeches are done in English, you get to improve your vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation as well! If in the beginning, your club members applauded your effort, later, they'll applaud your skills. Most of all, it's FUN! Members can share anecdotes, experiences and even jokes through the various activities and speech projects. What do we achieve? The ultimate goal for a new Toastmaster is to become a CTM - a Competent Toastmaster. You get there by completing the first 10 Speech Projects. Some members may decide to go further and complete the Advanced Toastmaster programs. You will receive an award for each level achieved.? But we believe that the ultimate reward is experience -- once you've conquered stage fright, you can almost conquer the world! Think about it -- the world's greatest leaders are also great speakers. Gandhi, Winston Churchill, even Hitler. And for good reason - nobody wants to follow someone who gets tongue-tied onstage! Becoming a Member Toastmasters has changed the lives of thousands of people the world over. True, it requires hard work and dedication, but the skills you learn in Toastmasters will take you to the level of great world leaders and beyond. The next time someone asks you to do a presentation, wouldn't it be nice to just stand up and speak, without worrying about stage fright?
