June 4, 2004 – The First Movement

I think I felt my baby move for the first time. Not quite sure though. It felt like
a butterfly fluttering inside my stomach. What an eventful day!!

June 7, 2004

Today’s appointment with Dr. Lurvey was at 2:00 p.m. Anirudh and I went to the hospital
around 1:40 p.m. Ms. Nati Mora did the routine tests and we were able to meet Dr. Lurvey
immediately. He picked up the “swoosh-swoosh” sound of the baby’s heartbeat using a
hand held ultrasound device called Doppler. It also sounded like a galloping horse.
It felt so nice to hear that sound after a very long time (- the last time I heard
that was, before Anirudh was born – sounds silly, eh???). He said I was doing absolutely
OK and that the baby is also just the right size.

This time also, I had lot of questions to discuss with him and he answered everything
          patiently.

I was 15 weeks and 2 days along then, and hence he advised me to go for an in-depth
ultrasound, which is normally done between the 18th and 20th weeks of pregnancy and
asked me to come back in 6 weeks and meet a Nurse Midwife. The appointment was
accordingly made for Jul 19 ’04, with Ms. Jacqueline Rice.

Then I went to the Radiology Dept and scheduled the in-depth ultrasound on Jun 28 ’04.
Anirudh had an appointment with his pediatrician at 4:00 p.m. We reached home at
5:45 p.m. after that got over.

This time, we did not go for any pre-natal classes. Not because we knew everything,
but felt it would be very hectic and difficult with Anirudh. Instead I am just reading
the book “What to expect when you are expecting” and the other handouts and brochures
that we got from the classes that we attended while I was pregnant with Anirudh.

June 28, 2004 - The In-depth Ultrasound Scan

I had started feeling the baby move at various times – not really continuous, but more
staggered. It is a wonderful feeling, Infact; I would say it is the best part of pregnancy.
It really really gives the mom, the feeling of being pregnant.

The ultrasound scan was scheduled at 3:00 p.m. I was instructed to finish drinking
5 glasses of liquid atleast one hour before the scheduled start of scan and not go
to the restroom thereafter until the scan was over. It sounded scary.

Sathish came home from work at 2:00 p.m. and then we left for the hospital. The effect
of having drunk five glasses of liquid was getting afflictive and the clock doesn’t
seem to tick at all . The technologist Ms. Karen called me exactly at 3 o’ clock
and immediately started the scan. I am so obliged to her. While she began the scan she
told me that I could ask her to pause the scan at any moment, if I wanted to use the
restroom. Once again, I am much obliged to her.

She said everything looked normal in the scan and added that I was 18 weeks and 6
days along in my pregnancy then, although it was only 18 weeks and 4 days since my
          last menstrual period.

We saw the baby open and close its mouth during the scan.

She also asked us if we wanted to know the sex of the baby and we said “No”. Thought
we would wait for a surprise.

All along the duration of the scan, Anirudh was having a nice time, looking at the
monitor, as it was something very new to him. He also played in between with Karen.
She was also nice in playing with him while performing the scan. At the end of the
scan, she gave us some pictures of our baby. The pictures were wonderful too (see below).
It clearly shows our baby’s profile – nose, mouth, chin, arms …
