The publication of Sweet Sussex is an important event for folk song fans.  Now, after many years out of print, England's oldest accurately collected folk songs are again on sale to the public.

In 1843 the Rev. John Broadwood of Lyne, in South East England, published his pioneering collection
Songs of the Peasantry of the Weald of Surrey and Sussex.  The famous composer Ralph Vaughan Williams said that, because of this book, Broadwood was "honoured in the annals of English folk song."

Sweet Sussex contains all 16 of John Broadwood's songs, together with another 10 collected by his niece, Lucy Broadwood.  For more about her see the details of Miss Braodwood's Delight.  She was a key figure in the first English folk song revival around the beginning of the twentieth century and the collector of many excellent songs.

Sweet Sussex , and its companion volume Miss Broadwood's Delight , are indispensable purchases for all lovers of folk song.
